You may be better off going to one of the local commercial coarse fisheries Whins Pond near Penrith is not too far away; I fished it years back when it was a Trout fishery and it is a really attractive looking venue certailnly not the usual muddy carp pool type.

You will be able to use maggots and conventional coarse type approaches there.

After a certain age, if you don't wake up aching in every joint, you are probably dead.

You may be a very good angler with a float, if so go for it, I would ledger worms as a first choice (well I would ledger minnows or stone loach as a real first choice, but thats against the rules) if your going to be shore fishing. You could do well for perch and even a chance of a trout on small/medium spinners and lures. Don't expect any pike in Ullswater though.

Whins pond is close, and it depends on what type of experience you want, I take the grandkids there to start them off on the pole because they are sure to catch it's so easy. I see the wild glacial lakes you will be amongst as a challenge, fairly pretty as it might be.. .Whins is still a commercial ! and I would feel a bit embarassed fishing it without a kid present.

Sounds lovely, you should do ok. take some lobs with you, the shores are not always easy places to get worms. I would keep the bait fishin' simple, running leger perhaps 'pop-up' the lobs with a shot of air in the tail.have a go with spinners too...have fun.
