Andy_1984 found a hook of this ilk a few eeks ago and I said I'd try it. It was a 12-14 I'd say and I said 'd try it for the tench and I did the hand test too and every time the hook stood up/turned over and found a hold.

 

I'll be looking for more. BTW, i was just using 6lb mono for the hooklength and hair. No worries.

Gave them a go on Saturday night after cats, a blank on that front but quickly tied a few rigs with standard braid and barbless hooks to chuck out the rods this morning with small baits while doing a slow pack down and had two takes from Carp, one single figure Common and a Mirror of 18lb 5oz very good hook holds both in the lower lip. So initial thoughts are good.

I use the Fox Arma-Point SSC (Short Shank Curved) Absolutely love them!

 

The hookhold they give is astonishing :)

I had heard that the curve shank can cause mouth damage particularly with smaller species and smaller carp. I create a very similar effect using soft shrink tubing which seems to be ok....

Can any of you who use these hooks regularly comment on Rich's post. Similar to Rich I tend to use shrink tubing and will no doubt continue to do so for most of my fishing, but the ease of tying rigs on the bank with the curved hooks is very appealing. Obviously if there is a good chance of damaging fish then it looses that appeal.

 

I tend to think a lot of the damage is caused by those hauling fish in and not playing them. There does seem to be a culture of hauling fish in on heavy gear that some anglers practice. 3lb plus TC Carp Rods and Big Pit Reels now seem standard kit for a certain type of angler even for those fishing one or two acre commercial pools that contain only small fish and with no distances to cast. (I guess it's one of those things that those straight in to fishing through the Carp route get mixed up on and associate heavy gear with Carping with out understanding why some Carp anglers need to use it)

 

So my thoughts are in these situations what ever style of hook you choose the chances are it may cause damage. I think it is very easy to pick out the hook as the obvious item causing damage when it is often the whole set up.

 

Any one got any thoughts in general about hook patterns and any potential unsafe ones? My thoughts are it's how they are used in relation to your whole set up and it's not just the hook pattern it's self that causes damage.

When I used to do a bit of carp fishing I have had hooks of a similar pattern turn and 'double hook' fish. I don't use them any more.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music
