Dorset anglers urged not to try and catch bluefin tuna

Recommended Posts

"It would be irresponsible to intentionally kill one of these fish and it would be sad to see another killed in Dorset."

The Southern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority said anglers should release any they catch.

It should be for the anglers to decide, what if it's bleeding from the gills like in the case of the common eel, where the majority of the time the eel has taken a rather large sea hook down? Would be a waste to send a tuna back dead as well. Much the same as sending a tope back bleeding from the gills.

Tuna are shoel fish, so there are proberbly more, they are much safer here than in other waters where they are targeted. Perhaps they are on holiday. Can't really see the weymouth charter fleet trolling up and down portland harbour at present. Sounds like a healthy fishery to me.

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

I've seen this from DEFRA

....not only are bluefin tuna an endangered species which the UK is committed to protecting, but it is also illegal for commercial or recreational fishermen to target or land the species.

Commercial fishing is controlled through the fishing license and quota system.

Recreational fishermen are required to have an authorisation issued by the Member state- the UK has issued no such licenses.

(Article 12/1 of EU Council Regulation 302/2009 establishing a recovery plan for Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean bluefin tuna, requires that there will be no recreational fishing for bluefin tuna without the authorisation of the flag state.

No authorisations have been issued for UK vessels to partake in the recreational fishery.

As a result of this no catches of blue fin tuna should be taken. Where unavoidable catches are taken the tuna should be released alive if at all possible).

positively identified as a female Northern Bluefin. It was dissected by keen angler and aquarist Andrew Holmes from Blue Reef Newquay. He was supervised by marine biologist Dr Paul Gainey.

any rules in place for the channel. Have the Irish given permissions re the tuna in the atlantic?

What was the specis that our Wursel landed last year and kindly gave it up for identification?

Hello Barry

It was a bonito and there have been reports of a few other catches since.

I've just looked through my latest monthly licence variation, which tells me what not or what and how much I'm allowed to catch each month and there it says no blue fin tuna from all areas.

I wonder how the no dicard plan would cope if tuna did suddenly turn up in numbers.

I fish to live and live to fish.

There's an interesting one then, no protection under UK or European legislation under WCA or Habitats regs etc.! Do we have some loopholes here? Is the guy that spear-gunned the fish going to be prosecuted?

interesting

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Nice one Nick. The e u just shows they are not fit for purpose, no bans for commercial yet attempt's to ban the rsa without any rsa hooking into even one of them, they should all be ashamed. Waste of time and tax payers money, the lot of them.

Campaigners complained that debate on the fate of the Atlantic bluefin fishery was cut short and an immediate vote pushed through by Libya. Seventy-two out of 129 Cites members voted against the trade ban and 43 voted in favour, with 14 abstentions.

Hello Wurzel, thanks for the info, could it be that defra are exceeding their office with regards to no allowance if all these countries support fishing for them?

Would make exceedingly good headlines that tuna are being discarded due to eu legislation, sounds about on par i suppose.

Monaco introduced the proposal because it said only extreme measures can save stocks of the iconic migratory fish, which have fallen by 75% due to widespread overfishing.

Don't know why we are getting hot under the coller re the tuna, compared with the common eel, 98% depleted, this stock is only at 75%

Thats a strange response.

Surely its better to start the conservation somewhere, than not start at all.

Putting it into perspective, in the last few days we have had the greenie press, the greenies conservationalists, the trust all falling head over heels to explain to us how illegal it will be to take a tuna. Even stating that they would not like to see a second one killed, god forbid by some very very lucky angler.

Yet due to weak e u management in the news yesterday, to again put it into perspective it was reported that there was 1000 instances of mis-reporting of tuna landings to the value of upto 4 million quids worth, that's dead tuna removed from the stock, and 70 odd guys under investigation.

And we are chewin the cudd over a single tuna that to win the pools might be more accurate anology of catching one tuna either legal or otherwise in the channel.

As this item broke the internet wires were heavy with talk of protecting them. And we have only seen one for gawds sake.

Please don't get me talking about the rsa take ban on the eel. I would hate to put up some freedom of information letters regarding that travesty. :headhurt::)
