Bite alarms

I was browsing the web the other day and came across wireless bite alarms with remote receivers. Some of these claimed a range of up to 500 meters. I then looked on the EA web site and found the following byelaw

Unattended rods

Be sure you are in control

It is unlawful to leave a rod and line, that is unattended, in the water or over which sufficient control can not be effected

Then I wondered how one could obey this byelaw from 500 meters away. Are manufacturers deliberately encouraging anglers to break the law. Added to the fact that if you are that far away someone could easily remove your equipment. :o

The two best times to go fishing are when it's raining and when it's not

The stronger the signal the less likely it is to be blocked by obstructions between the alarm and the reciever (trees, piles of Stella, whatever) so officially it just means it's always going to alert you to a bite in normal fishing situations.

However, I've seen people (always carpers) a long way from their rods because of recievers. This year on one lake I fish there were a pair of carpers sitting together between their two swims, a long way from their rods, but it was OK because 'we've both got recievers'

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Watched a pole go by the other day after a noddy left it fishing. Most ammusing. 16m of carp pole makes quite a wake. It doesn't take much of an obstruction to block some of the cheaper recievers either. Any angler can be irresponsible.
