Cheap lure rods

Recommended Posts

Evening folks, just after some advice on buying a couple of cheap lure rods - sub £50 for the pair.

I'm Looking for rods capable of casting 20-50g wobblers/spoons/plastics and ideally no longer than 7ft. I know the budgets tight but these are just knockabout rods for the missus. Nothing flashy, just reliable. I've had good experiences with Abu rods in the past, but these were always in the lighter ranges.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I'd suggest you can't do better for what you want than a pair of Ugly Stik rods. Go with 2 piece if ordering from the States and shipping won't be bad.

Rods usually run about $30 each which brings the total cost (excluding shipping) to about £30 which is well below the limit for duty and VAT charges.

Just make sure the source will ship via USPS since the commercial carriers like UPS, FedEx, etc. lay on an admin/handling charge you won't want to pay.

You may be able to source the rods you want from a UK supplier but do check www.basspro.com to see the available range of rods for baitcasting or spinning use.

You could try these mate. I've not used one on the bank but i've had one in the hand and they felt top drawer for the money. 8' which is a bit longer than your desired length but you'll be able to cast further and have more control under the rod tip than a 7' rod.

P.S. I presume you'll be using fixed spool rather than multiplier reels?

As you will be only to well aware, UK manufacturers equate length with strength and finding a short but reasonably powerful spinning rod can be hard work.

I've not tried them but here a few to add to your check list.

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated. I should have said in my first post that the rods are for fixed spool reels. Already have my own multiplier setup for heavier work. I spend 90% of my time lure fishing at close to medium ranges, either from the bank or canadian canoe, so anything much over 6-7ft becomes a chore to handle.

I've bought many reels from the states in the past, but never rods. Don't trust them to be delivered in one piece - USPS are reliable I take it? Also I felt my budget was a little tight to justify buying from the states - maybe not.

The Ugly Stiks certainly seem to fit my requirements but a little out of my budget at UK prices.

I've owned a Ron Thomson rod in the past. A short, ultra-lite outfit (6ft-ish eliminator or something like that?) which was outstanding and wish I still had it. So I might be looking into the energiser, although it's a little on the long side.

Check out Devon Angling Centre. The Ugly Stik Lite 7' (18 - 50g) is available at £32.99 per piece and they might give a further discount for a pair.

Edit: Just found them at £25.99 each here.

I was a couple of clicks away from buying the Ugly Stiks when I spotted the Wychwood lure rod range.

Wychwood 7ft Rogue Plugger Rod 10-25g £20

Wychwood 7ft Lite Plugger Rod 30-60g £35

Anyone had any experience with either of these? If the casting weights are anything to go by, they pretty much cover all of my medium to heavy lure fishing needs.
