Dunno if you've heard?

the FBI issued a warning about the security breach in XP's pnp (plug and play) software??

It recommended disabling pnp as a matter of urgency !!

Then sometime later, the warning disappered !!!

Thanx Liam - and nice to see your name again.

I have XP Pro (switched over from 2K Pro) and I like it fine.

What sorts of problems did you have?

hi liam good to see you back

ive been usig xp pro for some time now, i think its great, if you dont like the look, then you can opt to run it as classic, all the benifits of xp with an almost 9xxx(ME) feel. if its hardware and add on probs, well i can understand that, but shouldnt be any real problem, just a bit of a pain, updating drivers and the like.

i too saw the PNP warning, about a month ago, i find it a bit strange that PNP can cause security problems, never the less, they released a patch, so its not any great cause for alarm, by the way it also effcts ME and 98. more info here

http://www.ahherald.com/bcug/2002/bs020124...24_security.htm

these things happen all the time as you know liam, rushing out os`s not finished, they are still finding security probs and others with 9xx and ME, it will go on forever i think, a good option though for people worried about it is to use windows update, normally a few paranoia updated every few days.

so on to things more important mate, when are you coming fishing, youve had a week or so off now, so i expect by tuesday you will need some release, so how about it, il keep plugging till you come you know :D

Yo Gray

It's even better to see me front ! :)

than me back!

XP SuckS !!! Big Time !

(see http://www.theinquirer.net/22120101.htm

for the

"It's ok,

XP's not carp, really!,

would we lie to you ?!)

Hardware's not the problem.

(Tho' finding drivers can be for some ppl)

It's M$ releasing stuff before its ready again.

I'm made up to see that the EU is pro-linux/anti-M$..

The EU is filing a law suite against the monopoly that is also known as Microsofty (M$)

and adding a levy (tax) to any goods bought from the USA

I totally agree, and will offer my services *behave* freely :)

Have you tried to

err

copy software using it?

Easy CD....for example?

Pile of carp.

Win98 rocks !!

Liam

ps I reckon , my dissertation is gonna be "Linux v MS" , in not so few words !

Gray - the security issue was due to the uPNP - the network aware portion.

Liam - "Easy CD....for example?". LOL - I'd rather drink warm spit than use that thing.

XP is doing fine for me and for anyone else I've talked to who has hardware that is up to the job. Granted, a system that will run Win9x just fine won't even think about running XP. OTOH, if I wanted a 9x system, I still prefer 95 with a couple of the nice things they added with 98 that will run with 98 like scanreg and the improved defragger.

As for the political stuff - I pass. We ain't never gonna see eye to eye on any of that. :D:D

I will say that since Billy Gates started from a broke student who knew some programming in the 80s and has a few bazillion dollars now, I don't think he will worry too much.
