MS Word

I know that I am a bit thick at times but why is it that when I open Word the page has a row of twenty hhhhhhhhhh's?

Apparently my missus had trouble with the printer and typed these h's to test it.

I have tried all sorts of ways to delete them and save the blank doc, changed the lettering and saved etc but no matter what I can think of I cant get rid of the little h's.

I even went back a week and did a sys restore and they are still there.

Can someone help me please?

Your other half appears to have changed the 'normal' template.

Does the word 'Normal' appear in the style combo box on the formatting toolbar?

Rather than get into a mess trying to change it back, it might be more straight forward to do a clean re-install of Word.

Den - there is a file called Normal.dot (the .dot files being pre-done templates) that controls what you get when you open a blank page in Word.

To fix it, just open a document, remove the offending letters, and then do a "save as" and select Normal as the name and document template (*.dot) as the type.

When done, close Word and then open a new document. It should be fine.

Along the same lines, if you find yourself usually making changes to any format options on new documents (like the font style/size and such) you can simply set the document as you will usually want it and then save that effort as Normal.dot. Or you can set up a number of different ones for various occasions/purposes.

Thanks for the replies lads.

Jim, I removed word, removed all the versions of hhhhh that I could find, switched off. Switched on, no word, so I reinstalled from CD.

The little hhhhh's are still there!!

Newt, tried what you suggested and still no luck.

I have removed Works and word again and reinstalled and they are still there.

I will keep trying,

Told you I was thick

When you open word, at the very top of the application in the blue bar, what does it say.

Should be along the lines of~:

Microsoft Word - lotsofhhhhh.doc

Once this is clarified we can make some progress for you.

Bits bobs, it says ...Document 1 Microsoft Word, that is all????

Re Newt instructions...I open word and the offending hh's are there, so I delete them, click File>>>>>saveas>>>>select file type as Normal, then Document template as type. When I try to save it the PC tells me that there is already a file open with that name so I have to change it!!

What i can't get my head round is that if I remove word and reinstal this template is still there.

Do you know how to do a document search?

Go to your Desktop and press F3. Search for norm*.dot and make sure you search the whole of your C drive.

Once the files have been found open them individually. If one of them contains the "hhhh" then delete the "hhhh" and save the file with the same name and in the same location. You will probably have to use "Save As" so you can change the file type to .DOT instead of .DOC

If no "hhhh" found then don't amend the file, just close and move to the next one.

Try uninstalling word and then defrag the hard drive. Might work!! There is something left behind that is not being replaced when you re-install.

When you do the 'save as' choose 'document template' as the file type and call it Normal2.

Close word and find Normal.dot in explorer.

You may find several instances of it within different profiles of users. Delete it/them!!

Try opening word again and it may have worked!

If not, close word and find your 'Normal2.dot' file in explorer and try re-naming it to 'Normal'.dot.

Then open word. I don't think I've missed anything!!

Bits bobs, Jim and Courtone, thanks a lot for your help and more importantly the encouragement.

I have cracked it at last, mind you I had to go fishing for a few hours or the bxxxxy PC would have ended up in the bin.

Bits bobs,I found the file norm*.dot, it was hidden, and there was only one and yes it had the hh's in it. I deleted them, tried saving in various ways and types and ended up with a load of new ones!

Feeling confident I deleted these new files and they stayed deleted, so feeling even bolder I simply highlighted the Normal file and sent it to the bin, No hhh's anymore.

Thanks again lads,
