just installed xp (again) and its was running like a slug ,on opening the performance tab i noticed that the processor was running at 100% closing down all the programs on the start bar it was still running a 100% looking under processes on was using 99% of the cpu it was EVNTSVC.EXE doing a search for it it was a realplayer file ,disablinging the autoupdate (which it seamed to be ) done nothing ,i deleted it ,and now my cpu uses 2% ,why does this file run ????? and why does it need so much power????

also in an upgrade from win 98se to xp do i need to get administrator rights  (home version) as when trying to uninstall nortons firewall   it says i cannot do so without administrator rights

The version of unreal that ships with XP is well known to behave badly. CPU hog, spyware, and other ungood stuff.

Hard to completely uninstall but easy enough to tame the bad parts.

1. MSconfig and uncheck TkBellEXE

2. Find and rename rndal.exe and evntsvc.exe

- to rndal.old and evntsvc.old

3. After doing those, you should still be able to

- run realplayer if you want but it won't

- intrude.

4. Get another media player that suits you and

- associate your media files with it rather than

- real player.

And there are a number of things on XP that you must be logged on as administrator to do.

On XP-pro, you can accomplish the same sort of thing by going into Computer Management (easiest for me is right-click My Computer then click Manage) and adding your user account to the administrative group.

Not sure if XP-Home has the same sort of feature or not. Never used it or even seen it.
