Take the side off again check where the IDE lead (s)(41 strand ribbon cable)plug into the into the motherboard. Give them a gentle but firm push either side and give it a try.

It takes longer for the river to get to the sea than it does for a man to make an error.

Cheers for the advice lads. Almost went completely pearshaped just now........switched off power and pushed/pulled every lead I could find.......powered up and NOTHING.....blank screen...not even a blue one!!!

So went back and pushed/pulled some more and all OK now except still no cd and cdrw drives.

The power leads are red/black/yellow, I did check all the IDE leads, but will have another go at the one which seems to come from the drives.

If both drives are connected to the same ribbon cable, disconnect one at a time and the other drive might work. The disconnected drive will be playing up if the other works. This is saying what others have allready said, but perhaps in a different way!

Got it Jim, I did just that with the IDE cables and it looks as if the cdwr is defunct.

At least I now know what an IDE cable is, and a motherboard :D

Down to PC world tomorrow,

I've got a Phillips cdwr that windows explorer sees but asks me to put a disc in even if there is one in there. The disc does not appear to spin up even thought the lights come on. I figured a new drive was a cheaper option than someone trying to repair it. The new drive is faster!
