total rooky but need to get a few things straight in my head!

firstly anchor position! do u have the ancher line running from the bow or the stern? as in ar u fishing down currant or into it and drifting down?

rod rests! getting a kayak for next spring, not really a fan of flush mount rests! (they the holes u put the but in? in the hull eeerm right?) do you recon i could just get a stable yak and yous one of the seats with the the rod mounts in the back and progress onto fitting some forward mounts? could i buy a non fishing stable yak and fit it out slowly as and when ive the time and money?

sorry if these ar dumb questions, but total newby and these thing have been bugging me!

Its all up to you,

I have seen anchours running both ways it all depends if you want to face the current or not. I use mine at the stern mostly since its a double yak and I sit at the back.

I have made my own rod rests out of white plastic tubing (waste water piping from B&Q) they work fine, or you can buy bolt on speacialist rod rests that are not flush mounted, they do look very sexy and I may get one of those next year.

Most important is your safety gear. Flares, PFD. Yes take your time do it a little bit at a time, that way you can learn where you want things before you drill any holes and think "I wish I'd put that over there.

Tie every thing down! I have streacky bungy cord between bow and stern running along the side, every thing that can fall over board has a line and clip so you can't loose it. If a wave washes over the top or you capsize it would take a lot of money to replace all the tackle and rods and reels you could lose.

cheers mate! lived by the sea most of my life, and arfter getting swept off shorham harbour when i was 10 on a cod bashing trip and having to be picked up in the life boat gemini! (now have a big fear of drowning) ive total respect for the sea, and saifty is the first on the list! and ill have all that before i even think about going out! used to yak years ago, but will take it out for a good few sessions just to get used to the yak and practice getting back on bourd in the case of a wipe out, before i think about fishing!

In the USA there is a bit of a thing about getting getting a standard kayak and fitting it out yourself -more kudos there!

The non angler kayaks are exactly the same as the angler versions - only they haven't ahd the few fishig extras put on, that's all. What you are suggesting is a perfectly sensible way of going about things.

Re anchor - the most conveneint system is to rig an outhaul - or two - the length of the yak (or split it, one forward and one aft) then you can set the anchor wherever it puts the kayak in the best position for fishing in those conditions. Go and have a look at the Anglers Afloat site for some ideas on how to rig an anchor outhaul - or any of the kayak fishing sites (there are now dozens of them!) www.kayakfishingstuff.com is a good one. Have a look at their rigging pages.

The rod holders are easy to fit and many people don't like flush mounts, so do your thing for what you need. If you said what kind of fishing you intend to do would help! There will be loads of advice coming through as more people see this topic.

See you on the water next year then!

You will defo see me on the water next year! the only thing holding me up is that im in the process of moving and gota get xmas out of the way, as i know if i did a few hundred quid on a yak my girl would have my balls for brekfast, The target species down on my hunting ground (littlehampton to brighton, with most done off my home turf worthing) would be flattys and bass, and later in the year and with a lot more experience smooth hound and possible tope!

Its a pretty featureless part of the sea with just sand flats untill u get to the other side of brighton. Tho the tide can really pick up on certain moons,

Brighton peir got smashed in the big storm of the 80s and is now a lump of rusting iron calapsing into the sea! its a little to far to cast from the beach to the cluster of struts and girders that still suport the skeleton of the end of the peir! (have a look on the net i think it looks well fishy) and ive never seen a boat near it but know the submerged structure is going to be crawling with fish as its submerged all the time in say 10 or so feet of water! think a yak would be ideal to get a rappala or mackral head in amongst the possible bass ther! as very large bass ar cought from the brakers only a few hundred yards away in somtimes 3ft of water!
