Hi,

We were told it was a 'Greasy Grouper' !! Was caught on a rapala CD18 Blue Mackerel, deep diver while trolling very slowly off a reef. Was landed in water about 8 to 12 mtrs deep. Took quite some time to pump the fish up. No major run after the strike..... the fish just headed straight down and tried to get into the rocks.

We spent a night out fishing with some local fishermen and the condition for joining them was that we carried no rods. We went along armed with 150 lb mono and some nuts which were used as weights. I was quite thrilling fishing with hand line but we weren't very good at retriving line really fast by hand, thus missing alot of bites. The highlight of that night was a 5 foot moray that went nuts in our small boat and a small shark we almost landed. A pity we didn't use steel leaders or we might have landed more fish. Quite amazing to see what the locals manage to haul up with handline.

Are you sure it was a wahoo, looks like a kingfish to me, but I'm no expert!

Almost certain it`s a wahoo. Both the wahoo and king mackeral (king fish) have two dorsal fins. The first dorsal is long and low and probably folded in the picture. The shark shaped dorsal that is visible is the second dorsal.

One of the easiest ways to tell them apart is the lateral line. On the Wahoo it dips around the centre of the second dorsal and that`s clearly visible in the picture. On the kingfish the lateral line dips noticeably forward of that around the centre of the first dorsal.

pelyma is right, it is a kingfish not a wahoo.

i've caught both in kenya and it is a bit like coalfish and pollack here, once you have seen them side by side you can see a big difference

i didn't want to look pedantic and waited until someone else noticed

nice fish though at 27lb, nasty teeth same as a wahoo and just as tasty :)

a wahoo caught by me and held my mate tony

what happens to your bait when a big kingfish gives it a wee kiss

Unbearable, isn't it? The suffering of strangers, the agony of friends. There is a secret song at the center of the world, and its sound is like razors through flesh.

Happy Dude,

never actually had any problem in telling the difference between a coalie and a pollack, then again if you have`nt caught one before fair enough. Think we just have to agree to disagree on this one, (would`nt worry, I`m usually wrong), no doubt someone will make a few calls and suddenly an expert with marine biological qualifications will appear to put us all right and save us further embarresment.

Joking aside happy dude, was simply going by the lateral line. I aint caught kingfish but have had wahoo. All I did was check the IGFA species book and based on that its` a wahoo.

Does`nt really matter, whatever it is it`s a nice fish and bet it fought like a good `un..

Stan.
