Rods For Tench Fishing

Yes....yesterday I had 5 inside 3 hours from Newsham Park in Liverpool.... using float-fished breadpunch and worms (alternated) on dead depth over a bed of hemp and crumb. Size was nothing spectacular, the largest was just over 3lbs. Using 4lb Exage straight through. I was actually looking for bream, but wasn't going to complain too hard!

Across the lake from me, a lad had 2 doubles and a 23lb mirror on worm over hemp and maggot in the same period.

Impressive stuff Alan, even in cold weather most fish will get thier heads down for hemp. What was the air temperature do you reckon?

Now this is a good tench rod ;)

There is a serious point behind it - for a small farm pond, any rod capable of casting tackle a few yards and springy and strong enough to hold a decent tench will do.

It is not the rod that is important, but the presentation - right bait, right end tackle, right place, right time, and without spooking the fish.

Of course, if you need distance (as in a large lake or gravel pit) then the rod becomes important, although even in large waters tench can often be found in the margins.

The rod (and reel) were made by a primary school boy, working under my supervision. He caught many tench with it.
