Deal Pier Report

Took a trip to Deal Pier yesterday to have my first proper go at the live baiting for bass.

On arriving a young angler asked to use my drop net to land a bass. I asked if he wanted help to do this and he replied yes please. As it turned out they didn’t need the net to land a hooked bass, this bass was just stemming the tide about 3 feet down and didn’t look that healthy. I asked the young anglers not to disturb the fish, as it looked really tiered and to be honest quite ill.

We caught plenty of pout live baits fished hard with these until the mackerel showed then we put two large live mackerel baits out.

We didn’t get any bass but did get a bite taken out of the side of a live mackerel. Also one angler had a very large bass follow his string of mackerel in, so they are about.

There was however a few things that got my back up, there was lots of mid teenaged anglers feathering mackerel, they were catching plenty of fish with many full houses. This was good to see until I noticed what they all had started doing. The youngsters were just swinging the strings of mackerel straight behind their heads onto the boards of the pier deck. Then they were unhooking them and throwing them as hard as they could at the deck to kill them. This wasn’t good to watch for me as an angler so god only knows what any antis would think.

On this trip I took a pal who is a very keen and good course angler, he started to clean up all the lose fishing line. It started in the car park some 200 yards from the pier. 100s of yards of discarded fishing line crammed in the car park hedges. When we got to the pier there was discarded line everywhere. Leaders, main line hook lengths all over the place.

Any one found doing this I think should be banned from fishing.

Some interesting points Sam, and I must agree that chucking mackerel around does not give anglers a good image, but I just wonder what the antis would complain about most, youngsters chucking mackerel on the deck boards to kill them or an adult impaling a hook in a live mackerel or pouting to use as a live bait, talk about throwing stones in a glasshouse!!!!.

I wasnt shouting and screaming about my livebaiting, no non anglers see what Im doing, these yobs were very noisey football types.

And if you think my disreet use of livebaits is equel to yobs throwng live mackerel about then your off your head!

I removed most of the replies to this thread since it had wandered off into a slanging match.

Sam - I think your topic has merit but I also think that you read content into Pout's post that wasn't there and are mad at him for something he did not say.

We'll take one more try at keeping this a civil and productive post. Otherwise, it vanishes.

Screw the anti's they'll complain about anything. It's the general public we have to concern ourselves with. Whenever I livebait it's done discreetly and with minimum fuss, at the end of the day I have no wish to show others the methods I use in catching fish. This is especially so on piers, for the usual animals that frequent them do not deserve to catch anything. Minimum fuss keeps the bait fit enough to last the day if need be.

The whiting livebait I used on Saturday was returned none the worse for wear having evaded the notice of any Bass.

To compare the wasteful thrashing and throwing of strings of Mackeral to livebaiting is lunacy.

Given the goings on during the Mackerel season at most of our piers, it's about time a bag limit of say a dozen fish was introduced.

Obviously, this would only work where piers where they are effectively marshalled but it would be a start.

I agree, I have seen a couple of lads push a local authority wheelie bin full of makerel of off a pier a couple of years back I can only guess they intended to sell them, ban feathering from piers ( Its bl00dy dangouros any way) if the mackies are in you can catch plenty on a mepps and have a bit of fun as well,

What's new? It's been happening for years, decades. It's just that when you get older you get less tollerant of this kind of thing.
