Overhead power lines

Glenn, it may simply be that the canal is slightly different there as perhaps dredging and weed-cutting machines can't/don't operate around the power lines. Anything different of course on a relatively featureless water like a canal could be a hotspot.

 

Indeed. Also possible I suppose that on a heavily fished water the lack of anglers (who are taking note of the ban there) might make a difference. In this case you hardly see a soul fishing even on a warm eveving and the cables are so high I don't think they could stop 'works' going on. Dunno. Of course it could all just be total coincidence :)

 

If there was an effect from the actual cables I wonder if it might be insects being affected and providing a good food source just there. Can't see how the cables would actually *zap* a flying insect as there would be no circuit in action to do the zapping, but could they conceivably attract them or could the static disorient them?
