  1. However I do have these on my laptop. easy to access on the net. Just a little light reading. http://icesjms.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/64/7/1444 http://icesjms.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/64/7/1491 Regards. Tony.
  2. Thanks for the welcome back. Budgie, Give me a little time and I will dig out some info for you to read through. may take a while as i will have to put my old pc back together to access the hard drive.
  3. Does the NAC have an ongoing policy on the subject of pettitioning government etc on this issue? Any studies/reports on such that we could see? Hi Budgie, Its been quite a while. I am no longer within the NAC and so I can not comment on the work being done by Mark and the rest of the NAC committee. I can how ever confirm that Clive Dennison (former Eel Study Group and NAC) and Myself ( former NAC) are still making head roads into the situation regards eels and their decline. We are still currently in dialog and submitting views and opinions on a few issues at present to the EA and wider European Union. states to continue with the recovery plans. (Just keeping them aware that they are being watched) On the subject of papers, which specific info would you wish to read? I will try to pass over some info if you can be more specific. Regards and keep well, Tony.
  4. Hi All, I've not been on here for ages. Nothing much seems to have changed. Well done to Mark and Dave for flying the NAC banner. For those who don't remember me, I talked a lot about the eel decline. long before it was common knowledge. I lobbied the EA and Defra, putting the concerns of the UK eel anglers over the falling eel and elver numbers and also the un-controlled commercial eel and elver fisheries. Well where are we up to now?? Well. there has been world wide recognition of the problems facing the eel. The EA and Defra in the UK have put the EMP's together. following on from the European Eel resolution , which Clive Dennison and I drafted for the EAA, some time ago now. The wheels turn very slowly. but they are turning. It has been suggested, and correctly so that the focus of attention be on the commercial trade in eels. That was our aim for many years. That work will see maturity in the future. starting I believe with controlled or even a total ban on elver netting. This is already being muted along with registered dealerships, which was a proposal in the MAFF review. To the lad who posted his original question and to those who have replied. Eels ARE in a state of serious decline. there are isolated populations which seem to go against this line of thought. But you must always remember that the European Eel, (Anguilla anguilla) is a European wide species. The species cannot rely on some restrictions in some areas. but there needs to be a European wide ban on the export of elvers to the far east. There was a bird once called the Dodo (Raphus cucullatus) eaten by sailers who thought they where not doing any harm. we all know how that story ends. I am not going to preach about taking eels for the pot. you can make your own minds up on that one. but remember as Leon pointed out eels are used by scientists as indicators as to how polluted and what levels of chemicals/ toxins are present in our waterways. as the spend much of there time buried in the silt, their flesh absorbs these chemicals, some of which are very nasty. if you still want to eat eels after reading this then you must have eaten too many already. http://www.thermo.com/eThermo/CMA/PDFs/Var.../File_31118.pdf Thats just one paper there are loads on the net if you don't believe me. Regards, Tony.
  5. Hi Wayne. Which club control the runcon end. I have heard of a couple. Can you clarify it for me?. Regards. Tony.
  6. Budgie. I know all your posts regards eels are being put with the knowledge of an "EX Netsman" I appreciate your honesty on the subject. I always find your posts show balanced opinions. The NAC held a fishin on a Kent water this summer. Two days after we had fished two men were seen in broad daylight illegally removing eels from the water, with nets that had been set for 2 weeks in the water without the owners concent. All types of fishing is now banned on the water. including angling. Very Sad.
  7. Budgie, I think a net of that size is designed with only one purpose in mind, To catch EVERYTHING that swims near it. Anglers dont realise the number of "their" fish which get caught and taken by commercial nets men in inland waters. they would be shocked if they knew the true numbers. A commercial intreast in netting a dwindling stock will make as much money as it can from whatever catch it retains and can sell on. Theirs always someone who will buy from them.
  8. not a small net either!!! http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=h...cial_s%26sa%3DN
  9. Sounds more like a fyke net, eels will be returning to the sea to spawn. fyke nets catch many "bi-catch" fish as well as eels.
  10. I have been thinking of a line to put on my bait runners for the pike this winter. I have seen the Berkley Vanish Transition In the 14lb, Does anyone know if its much good? I have used braided line for the last 10 years so I have lost touch with most of the new lines out there. Regards. Tony.
  11. Thanks Brian. Hopeing to get over there this weekend do you ahve any contact details mate?. Judy. mmm
  12. Tremendous eel Warren. Well done from the National anguilla club membership.
