ML-L3 Remote with Nikons - question..

Simple question really - can anyone tell me if this thing works from behind the camera? Reading the instructions on my D50 it shows the sensor at the front of the body. I particularly want to use this with macro shots so I don't really want to be having to "shoot at" the camera from the front.

Anyone help please?

Thanks

The wireless remote on my Nikon 8800, frustratingly works from the front only. Presumably since its primary function is self portraiture, then thats the way that Nikon thought it would work best. Ideally the sensor should be on the top of the camera which would allow you to use the remote from just about any angle. For macro stuff, I tend to use the timer

Thanks for that Argyll.

I find that a bit poor really. I'm interested in insect macro shots so the timer isn't going to be that effective. I can see myself having to focus then use the remote from the front. I assume i'll be able to use it pretty close but what a hassle.

This is the one thing I've found with my D50 where it prompts a .."what were they thinking??"

Does the D50 have a plug in the side to take remote lead? I have just baught the D70s, it has a socket in the side into which I plug a 3ft remote lead, it also has a wireless facility, interestingly the wireless thingy is £6 cheaper than the wired remote!

Fatlard, I made up a little bracket and superglued a small mirror on to it.

It fits under the camera using the tripod fitting. this works perfectly from behind and at quite a wide angle as the mirror is convex.

I can use it at about 15 feet away, behind the camera.

Most times I use a long air release (I connect 2 coils of tube together fo about 40 feet) but this also requires a special mount for the plunger. You can buy the air release accessories in camera shops, but I don't know anyone who makes the mirror attachment.

Thanks for the replies.

CJS2 - not that I can see it doesn't. It has 3 connections - and checking the Dpreview site it says it has -

• USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed) *

• Mass storage / PTP selectable

• Video out

• DC-IN (optional AC adapter)

Poledark - Interesting idea. Are you using a D50 also? In which case I assume you've checked out the remote situation and a straight cable connection as CJS2 isn't possible with this model?

Checked it out, the cable plug is an addition on the 70s, heard a few comment about the lack of a cable release on the 50! Ho Hum, suppose something has to go as prices are trimmed? Irritating, but the D50 is still a top camera at the price:yeah:
