Fake bread for chubbing?

I tried magic bread a few years ago in a slow stretch of the Kennet for roach, and it was fine. I didn't notice any reduction in bites compared with the real stuff, and it stayed on better. But then my real bread probably wasn't new enough.

Then I got a new packet and for some reason it didn't work so well - a bit stringy. Strangely I found it better when it was a bit stale, but that might be me.

Strictly speaking, though, Magic Bread isn't fake. It's real bread, I think, treated in some way.
