hi, err well depends what elastic the pole has anything from 16 should be safe for carp but i usually use a 20. The whip will be ok for small course fish but hook a carp to 5lb and it will most likely snap as it has no elastic and the 10 ft match rod should be ok for handling small carp up to 10 lb possibly also depending on what line you have. For carp you should use the maximum recommended line you can use with the rod but maybe you should consider getting a proper carp rod with a t/c of around 2lb. This keeps the fun in playing the fish but ensures you won't snap the rod or damage it but you must be careful when playing a fish because you are more likely to cause hook pulls because the harder action doesn't cushion short lunges like a match fishing rod would. Hope you gett yourself a good rod and catch many carp! fortune

Personally I think that you need to start updating. I don't mean that you should renew just for the sake of renewing but a 10' JW rod is great for a kids first rod where small fish are the likely target, but not so hot if you are seriously going for smallish carp. Graphite glass (composite) poles came and went with the ark, by todays standards they are fairly horrid things.

Argos might still have some of their twenty odd quid Hyperloop match rods. Shop around and you can certainly update at very low prices at the moment. Don't forget E.Bay!

blimey he's far more updated than i ,14ft PDQ fiberglass rod and abu 506 reel ,when i wear them out i might use my abu ferralite and err another 506.

cant see why you buy stuff when you havent finished with the old one

maybe in 30 years time the ferralite may become "number one" rod in the bag but i doupt it

just because its old doesent mean you cant use it buying the latest may just mean your blaming your old stuff because you need an excuse because you cant catch fish ,a workman blaming his tools scenario :headhurt:

old stuff just doesent stop working overnight (unless you break it) :D

I agree with what a lot of people have said, money is tight these days for alot of us. if the money side is a bit tight, have a look at argos, i know its not your tackle shop. but these days they are doing some great stuff at very good prices. they have some good 13' match rods and reels for around £40. carp rods for around the same, and 11m poles with two extra top sections for around £90. all these will give you what you need to fish most venues for pleasure.
