Took mine a couple of years ago at Havant, cheapest that I have seen, if my memory serves me right it was about £70 all in.

It is best to do this through a college unless you want to be ripped off, have heard of people being charged £120 +. Make sure that the course included the exam and certificate, some charge extra for that bit :(

Strictly speaking you need a ship's radio licence as well as the VHF operators certificate. The MCA had the following to say:

"A hand held radio would normally be covered by the base unit being

licensed but if there isn't a base unit then yes it should be

registered. You register it with the Radio Licensing Centre (0870 243

4433) of OFCOM (0845 456 3000).

Regards

MCA Infoline

Logger No: 53296"

you can complete the form online but it isn't free (what in this life is?). Completed mine on the 7th and the licence turned up in the post today.

BUT - even if you haven't completed the course or got the licence take the radio out with you, have it on Ch16 and yell into it if you get in trouble - better a small fine (at worst) than it being your last ever kayak trip.

According to Ofcom and as explained in the SRC course, EVERY transmittable item of equipment needs to be individually (albeit on the same licence document) registered. Therefore a portable isn't covered under the fixed station unless it is also specifically listed on the licence document. If you have an existing fixed station licence Ofcom will issue you with an amended licence with any additions for free.

Oh B*gger

nice of the guys at radio licencing to tell me I could wait 3 weeks then get it for free. I would have words but what exactly are they going to say?

Now need to regain my £20 in some other way - suggestions?
