Pike/Bass rod

I managed to destroy (don't ask...) a nice Blue Fox "Shore specialist" 11 ft Bass rod earlier this year which I've also used for light deadbaiting on the local rivers. I really liked it too. It was nominally 1-3oz rated but I'm thinking maybe I should replace it with something in the 2-4oz range as I think that it's less likely to get used with lures. I don't want to spend more than about £70 tops but I might be persuaded if there was a real bargain available.

Anyone like to suggest a replacement?

Just spotted the JW system rod on Ebay. For some reason the JW brand puts me right off. Anyone used one?

I have a Shimano Hyperloop bass rod rated at 3 oz casting weight, don't know the test curve, but its one hell of a rod for £40. Its used for sea fishing chucking 3oz weights as far as you can see off the breakwater fishing for mackeral and also for live and deadbaiting on the rivers.

With a different set of foam handles on the rod would pass for one twice the price. Its always in my bag as a first change/swap rod and has been lent out to friends who come piking with me and has accounted for some very big fish and seems to me to be the type of rod you want for both sea and fresh. Its 12ft by the way

Er, fewer opinions than I'd hoped - although The Shimano certainly sounds good value (anyone suggest a trustworthy supplier?). What about the JW combination rod? Someone's got it on ebay for £49 + p&p. Anyone got or used one? Are they all carbon?

Just had a search for the Shimano rod but I'm having trouble working out which model you guys are referring to.

Big clue above you there John,"Shimano hyperloop bass rod" should just about do it 12ft casting weight 3oz.

I bought mine from my local shop where I buy just about all of my gear and it cost me £40, don't know what other retailers are charging as I never bother to look

well i have just bought myslef a dragon pike rod from an angling times offer. Its a powercaster dragon pike rod with anti friction rod eyes. Its a lovely rod with a RRP of £40 and its was on offer for £10!

Its a powerful test curve rod which has great valvue for money. I am an experienecd predator angler and have purchased myself many predator rods for £100's of £ more than this and found very little difference.

Think the points been missed a bit. John is after a rod that is multi purpose for a bit of piking and for fishing for bass at sea.

Just to update you on how the Shimano works, just got in after a day on the river for two fish, one at 15lb and the other at 16lb and the smaller of the two was caught on the Shimano bass rod , no problem at all for the rod and at no time did I feel I was exceeding the rods capabilities nor did I feel I was'nt in control of the fish , so its a thumbs up from me

er, taken me a while to get back to this...

"Shimano hyperloop bass rod" does indeed get lots of hits on a search, but, if you go to one that isn't dead and is a well known supplier - like Tackleshop.co.uk - there are lots of shimano hyperloop rods, but not one that meets the description. I assume that it is actually the one listed as the "surf fishing rod": maybe?

Also, the blank looks pretty hefty, like most of the lower price rods. Is it? Thanks for everyone's contibutions so far btw.

Try this link https://www.veals.co.uk/acatalog/Shimano-rods.html. Its the seabass one at £39 that I have, casting weight 3.5oz and no its not a thick heavy blank, its surprisingly responsive with a good tip action and a good through curve under compression and good value for under £40
