Sea / River

Where saltwater meets freshwater, the freshwater tends to flow over the top of the denser sea water, so often there are coarse fish in the top layers, and saltwater species down at the bottom.

And on Spring tides at low water, the freshwater species can be found far further down river than usual, especially if there is a lot of freshwater coming down the river following heavy rains.

(A friend fishing for mullet in the Medway was surprised to catch a couple of roach amongst the crabs and bladderwrack!)

At some point there will be places where a livebait has a good chance of catching pike as well as bass, which has come as a surprise to anglers fishing for one or the other, particularly when conditions are right for either to be found further up/downriver than normal.

So, where there is a likelihood of finding freshwater species amongst the sea fish, it's a question of choosing the right tide and tide state, and fishing shallow if you are targeting coarse fish in the top layers.

Paricularly if you are deadbaiting in very coloured water, the pike will be looking for a dead fish floating on the surface when they catch the scent trail of a dead fish that they can't see.

er, don't forget that you need a rod licence if fishing for freshwater species, even 6 miles out to sea!!

Leon,

Great post as usual.

Fishing seems to be my favorite form of loafing.

I know the joy of fishes in the river through my own joy, as I go walking along the same river.

What do you think if the float does not dip, try again I think.
