The best parts of Charmouth beach are nearer to the St. Gabriel's side - however, the cliffs are a bit dodgy at the moment and it takes some fun out of it if you are always looking over your shoulder wondering if a couple hundred tons of blue lias clay is going to start sliding down to you!

Like mousey said, squid and sandeels are good. Not too snaggy from the railings - clean sand with just the odd small boulder after about 40 yards. Watch out for the idiot surfers though if a good surf springs up!

St. Gabriels used to be a place where you had a chance of a monkfish. Harry Balem had a few big ones there, I can't remember the sizes.

Now does anybody remember Harry Balem??

That will age you.

Is Hugh Stoker still around as I have not heard anything about him for years?

Hugh Stoker lived, I believe, near Seatown in the 60's. According to 192.com there is a Hugh G Stoker at HILL COTTAGE CHIDEOCK BRIDPORT DORSET DT6 6JW. If it's not the same chap then it must be a relation (several more Stokers in the Bridport area). Perhaps he would appreciate a contact, if only to talk over old times. Invite him to Aglersnet, I'm sure he would have something to offer!!

Not heard of Harry Balem

Harry Balem was a Weymouth butcher.

None of this light line stuff for him.

35lb line for Bass and almost jerk their haeds off as soon as they bit.

I'm told he used to save all the offal and meat offcuts and let 'nature get at it' for a few days. A few days before a big competition he would go to his chosen spot at low tide (competitions usually coincide with Springs so the water would be very low) and bury all this rubbish in the sea bed.

His name is on quite a few cups.

Yes that would be his address; I was in written communication for a little while when I was looking for some of his books and it rings a bell. He would be 'getting on a bit now' - I'm pretty sure that he was born in 1920 so that makes him 82 now! I'd be impressed if he still fishes Seatown beach/under Golden Cap for bass!
