Paddle length

Recommended Posts

Hi lads

Bit of information needed please

I'm going to order a new Kayak next week and was wondering if my current

paddle will still be OK as the new yak is narrower than my present yak.

How do you determine the length of paddle required?

is it based on my wingspan :D or yak width or a bit of both

TIA

Worth reading this thread on the Hobie Adventure which soon turned into a discussion on paddle length!

http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=55177

Thanks for the link SpeciMan, having read it i'm even more confused

Just popped into the shed and measured my paddle it's 222cm tip of blade to tip of blade

but the feather if that is the angle of blades to one another is 90% :o which i think Simon

said is not good, never having paddled before last year i just bought the one the guy in the

shop recomended.

I have noticed that i have a job paddling in a straight line, but after reading

the debate realize that this may be because of the paddle, how do i get measured for a paddle?

Is this something i could do myself, also i'm left handed so have a left handed paddle.

You can have a lend of mine to try if you like Tom. I have several blade types and 3 different lengths up to 235cm. Just let me know and I can drop them off to you when your ready.

Have you ordered that new speed machine yet??

1 on the lure is worth 2 from the bait.

For the feathering I made my own by buying a carbon spigot from Bournemouth Kayaks

CREATE YOUR OWN SPLIT PADDLES (under touring paddles)

Carbon spigots. £5.00 (Various diameters)

Spring buttons. £1.50

Heat shrink. £1.00

and set it to 65 degrees all you do is cut the paddle in half carbon spigot on one and glue it after it has dried put the two together set the angle and then drill hole for the spring button job done

As for length place paddle upright and see if you can curl finger over the other end if you can't it's too long, if you can by how much if it is a lot you need a longer paddle this is only a very rough guide as it all depends on how wide your kayak is as well.

Lat/Long :- N50°58.366 W001°26.468

I must go down to the sea again

To the lonely sea and sky

I left my shoes and socks there

I wonder if they're dry?
