Interesting thing, but you could not really do damage to others but boats etc can do damage to you.

why should a kayak have insurance? no different to a surfer etc

? ? ?

can think of a number of circumstances which could lead to litigation. eg imagine hitting a child in the surf or running over a snorkeller. could be accused of damaging lobster buoys.

Depends on location I suppose, I do not like to fish by people therefore would not apply to me!

A surfer is more likely to cause injury to someone in my opinion

Can see why people would need insurance but should be one rule for everyone

Anyone looked in to getting insurance?

do you have insurance on your kayak?

I can see the need but what kind of cost would it incur?

If you hit an car that is not insured then their claim is void, does the same apply if you hit a surfer etc that does not have insurance?

I know how important insurance is but what are the legal requirements?

I found that some of the SW Lakes insist you have insurance for a Kayak and wont let you launch without it. I looked into it and found it was relatively cheap. Think I pay about £37 a year which gives third party cover, Theft or damage in transit, Personal Injury up to £20,000 and also theft from where I store mine when not being used. I added my second Kayak to the insurance for another £7.

Martyn is right and the most likely accident could be hitting a child in the surf. We live in a Nanny State were everyone is looking for compensation. I dont think it is a legal requirment but Insurance can make you relax a bit more.

I found the N W Brown can offer a policy exactly tailored to your needs.

Well worth looking into.

excellent discussion mate, well done for bringing it up i'd never thought about it before. i know that surfers at towan beach newquay cornwall had to prove third party liability by having a sticker on their boards but that was a couple of years ago and i don't know the logistics of policing it.

Incidently i fish at oxwich and am interested in what youv'e heard about the third party stuff for kayaks. I know that trailered boats using the slip way have to provide TP liability. Can you pm me where you heard about it or where i can get any info.

Catch and Release fishing is a lot like golf. You don't have to eat the ball to have a good time.

Details on insurance would be great

Might be an idea to insure in case something does happen, especially with the summer coming up and fishing new locations
