They work. Richi uses one a fair bit. I use one a bit. Better for long trips with a loaded kayak than just out for a spot of fishing. They can be a nuisance if serious fishign - in the way.

 

If you were on a camping trip and were going to troll a lure, briilliant. Also just plain fun when you have time to waste.

 

have a look at the delta rig we use on the sea kayaks - and the Pelican sit-on-top. You definitely WOULD NOT use one when wanting to fish. Definitely in the way! BUT, brilliant at harnessing the power of the wind. www.kayakuk.com - go to the gallery section to see some pics.
