Hi Tony

i havnt had any interaction with defender at all so far, so cant really coment on that, but, i can look into it for you, what update programes is it blocking, and what sort of messages are you getting, im just asking this because it sounde similar to the user account control.

you can always cut it out completely, Start>control panel>windows defender, a window will open, with a few options at the top, one of those is tools, Click this, then click options, untick Automatically scan my computer, this should stop it, but as i say mine is set to the default settings, and it hasnt bothered me at all so far. so let us know whats happening

Tony - if you know the sites and if you trust them (and software update sites should be fine) just add them to your IE list of trusted sites. That bypasses the checking and blocks from Windows Defender in most cases (maybe all but certainly most).

It might be worth a look at windowsbbs.com too. The forum section for Vista should have lots of good info already and you can get more if you post a question.
