can i pass the main line through a bead a couple of times?

A bead isn't going to do yor rod rings much good when you cast.

OK, find the approx depth and go to make an overhand 'granny knot' in the main line where you want the stop to be.

 

Don't pull the line through all the way, just make a small loop ....

 

 

Now insert 2cm or so of thin elastic band or power gum and tighten.

 

 

You can remove the elastic easily and the knot 'disappears'! Re-tie new depth if required.

 

Sounds fiddley; takes 0.5sec in practice!
