It's an extremely common newt. Some garden ponds are full of them.

I caught the biggest largemouth bass of my life using a rubber salamander like that years ago; 22" and 6 lbs. It was cruising the shallows and would not take anything until I tossed that lure out. Great fun.

Tried them drifting on a boat, for a laugh, no takes, but when i saw that they did not move much in the tide, i binned em.

I've never tried them in salt water and they do take some rigging and technique in fresh water but they tend to produce some really nice catches if done right.

 

Absolutely not good for lure anglers who just want something they can toss & wind like you would with a Big S.

Absolutely not good for lure anglers who just want something they can toss & wind like you would with a Big S.

 

It was the wriggle Newt that was missing, using them the same as a jellie worm or shad they looked good but the tail didn't move.
