I really can't imagine weather like this and never want to experience it first hand. Noon on Friday, Jan 04. Photos and more story at the link.

A mighty hurricane-force Pacific storm continues to clobber California with blizzards, damaging winds, and flooding rains. Hardest hit are the Sierra Mountains, where winds at Ward Mountain near Lake Tahoe were 86 mph, gusting to 163 mph, at 11 am PST. The storm responsible is visible just off the coast of Washington (Figure 1), and has a central pressure near 960 mb--similar to that of a Category 2 hurricane.

{admin note: the link failed for me. Not sure why. Copying the URL into a new window worked though so if the link continues to give trouble, copy/paste the below and it should work. Newt}

I lived about 30 miles west of Fernley, in Reno. The Truckee River is the only outlet for Lake Tahoe, traveling downhill through Reno and Fernley before emptying into Pyramid Lake, in ancient times a salty sea like the Great Salt Lake. When Tahoe gets a lot of snow or rain the Truckee gets swollen fast and tends to flood. They need this precipitation down Newt's way.

Incidentally, the headwaters of the Truckee is near the infamous Donner Pass. For what it's worth.

Be good and you will be lonely.
