So what happened to the ones stocked in '56 then? obviousley didnt thrive lke the Severn ones? So why bother again? is it that hard to understand?

As i understand it barbel were stocked in the Ribble back in the 50's but never got a foot hold. It was only after some lads got caught and prosecuted in the late 70's early 80's that they took off.

Hmm, the report does say that the problems were water quality and the lack of fish passes on the locks, which should have been resolved now.

I can think of a few rivers in the North West which now have barbel populations but which have never been officially stocked. Popular fish, barbel, and have a way of hitching lifts in cars.

There have been barbel in the Nene and Welland for a great many years. They used to breed in the Welland in a stretch at West Deeping, but they have been killed off by water abstraction and corresponding low flows. Several hundred were stocked into what was once a fairly strong flowing stretch at Market Deeping, but these days it almost slows to a standstill at times. The Nene around Yarwell is almost ideal for barbel - as long as they don't keep pumping all of the water out of the river.

English as tuppence, changing yet changeless as canal water, nestling in green nowhere, armoured and effete, bold flag-bearer, lotus-fed Miss Havishambling, opsimath and eremite, feudal, still reactionary, Rawlinson End.

The Angling Times put barbel into the Welland in 1955 (at the same time they put some into the Bristol Avon)...
