Got out at last

Ive not been fishing in ages as i got fed up with dragging a car full of tackle around and fishing the same old holes in the ground.

In my youth when i lived in west Yorkshire i enjoyed fishing the river Dearn which was a small river that was best fished with the wandering approach.

Near where i live now in Lincolnshire ive noticed a small beck and seen the odd Angler fishing it.

Yesterday i rode my mountain bike about 3 miles to check out a stream/beck near me that runs into louth canal.

I used to have a 10 speed racer and it was so easy to ride with minimum effort.

But i bought a mountain for health reasons and boy do they take some riding, if you stop peddling they just about stop unless going down a steep hill.

When i got home i was well panting .

Anyway back to the fishing, i had a good look at it and saw a few pegs that might hold a a few dace.

So i went to the local tackle shop and got half a pint of maggots and set a telescopic rod up for thursdays session.

Well thursday morning was windy with a touch of rain so i waited till after dinner and finally set off (in the car!) to see if i could catch anything.

I told myself if i cought 3 dace i would be happy and if i cought a chub or a trout it would make my day, i knew chublets were in there but i doubted trout would be.

On arrival i knew it wasent going to be easy due to blustery conditions.

Second trot down and i got cought up in a bramble bash overhanging the water and lost my float that Duncan fairley made me a few years back, boy was i gutted.

Set up again and after a few trots i bumped a fish off.

I decided to go for a walk up the beck looking for a deepish quiet spot with a steady pace and depth.

Alas i dident find an ideal swim but tried a few and was getting bites but a stumpy telescopic rod and blustery wind made it hard to hit bites.

I then saw this swim and decided to give it a few trots.

Second trot down i had a good bite and at last a fish on the bank.

A welcome Dace so i wasent waterlicked.

A few more trots and i had another good bite and i thought hey up this feels better.

Well when i saw it i felt like that Charles Rangeley-Wilson chap when he went on the quest to catch a trout in london.

I was well chuffed and if i dident catch anything else i was a happty man.

I did catch a few more Dace but gave up after a couple of hours due to the wind getting up and it getting harder to controle my float.

So i went home well pleased and look forward to fishing there again when its sunny and calm.

Eyup Tyke...result mate! I must say that the beck looks more like a drainage cut at first sight! But it must be reasonably clean to hold brownies. There'll be no shortage of natural food in there I would have thought...a slow moving beck out in the country, so it wouldn't surprise me if there the odd "keeper" in there too.

It'd be fun to fish with a small dry fly on a #2-3 fly rod later on in the year, with all those dace and brownies. Might well be some surprises to be had if no-one fishes it regularly!

Has the Dearne got so clean that it holds fish now? When I lived in west Yorks, many moons ago, (Thurnscoe) all the Dearne held was sticklebacks!

I know of at least 2 people that fish it regularly!!! (I've never seen anyone fish it tho) So far out that stream I've had Pike, Perch, Dace, Roach, Trout, Eel, Bream and even a Flatfish. I usually fish the other side of the bridge and I though the trout were confined to patches but I guess not. Glad to hear fish community alive and well in the streams! Perhaps we should tell the EA there's lots of fish so they can transport them to other rivers in the country??
