Well, life has changed a little, frustration and the constant nibbling at finances ready for retirement. I've committed to a Virgin cable package; 'Broadband, TV and Telephone'. Been a bit of upheaval, but the out come is; better TV pictures, more channels (set top box) telephone has load of extras features for free, the broad band is instant and on the face of it faster? Frankly all was OK as it was, but I have saves £10 per month on contract, not a special offer promotion! Come December, I will save an extra £10 when I can switch to Virgin mobile.

All this upheaval has unearthed a couple of issues that you may be able to help with. First, I have found a 'Nikon Multi function Battery Pack MB-D100 hand grip' I had it with my D100, which was traded, so if anyone can make use of it, it will cost you only postage, PM me.

The other issue is my old Nikon CoolScan LS-30. Originally purchased around transition; film to digital. LS-30, no need for it these days? However, I have hundreds of my Father slides in my loft, I would love to pick some out and digitise them? The problem is, I have lost the instruction books and CD for the LS-30, The cable may or may not fit my computer and the XP operating system will certainly throw a wobbly?

Any one got any ideas if its practical to pursue the LS-30, if so any ideas on sites? or cut my losses and look to a new modern film scanner when I finally decide to dig around in the loft and dust the cobwebs of Dads old Kodachrome's? Got a whole load of my own 35mm colour negatives from my magazine days as well, nice to put a few of them onto digital format. Any suggestions gratefully received

Looks like A SCSI (Small Computer Serial Interface) Bus connector, you will have to get a SCSI Card and terminator to fit into your PC. Not sure if they are still available as USB put an end to that.

You might find that the cost of the card makes gambling the scanner is OK a bit of a long shot. I have a few SCSI leads in my box of bits will have a look to see if I have a card.

As for a manual, Nikon support all their products way back with publications, Your local Camera shop should be able to get one at a price or try eeeeeeBay. ;)

All sounds a bit hit and miss to me? I have had further thoughts on my Fathers slides. I believe High Street film/photo shops and specialist studios transfer old slides to digital. If I were selective, choose say, 30/40 slides to represent his work, a few are memorable in my mind even now, 50 years on, he had an amazing eye. I feel that would be enough for me as a memory, the old slide projector, and a hand held battery viewer are still there as well, along with his old Kodak 35mm camera?

I have been very reflective recently  There is a 20 minute super 8 film in the loft of me and my late wife's '2nd Honeymoon' :P or perhaps more fundamentally the start of her convalescing. Arranged by my parents at the end of June 1969, Kathy spent 6 months in Hospital with TB (very serious in those days), we only got married in November 1968! Mum and Dad took us both to Brixham for two weeks, took over a large flat overlooking the harbour, waited hand and foot on us both . . . happy memories. I think they can transfer 'S8' film to DVD as well?

Had any experience of these 'film to digital' transfers?

And the ones YOU think are less important will be the ones others think the most important so do what you want but don't throw away the originals, leave that to others.

My Dad got TB, about 1963, together with a lot of other problems so I know how you feel (why do I say that when experts tell us it is not the thing to do!).

I used to do a lot of work with a firm called I C Video, bassed in London, they were very very good, I don't know if they are still around but it is worth a search.

Thanks Huge, Will never throw them away, just want a folder on my computer that I can look at some times . . . :)

TB is treated so differently these days, all most non existent in the UK, so the medics say? Kathy got over it, and we had 26 years of very happy marriage. I need to sort through a suit case full to bursting of old family photos, pre 1950! I'm gon'a need some courage to do this, I have the means to scan the B&W prints myself.

Hi SW,

I put all my old slides onto digital using this http://www.kauserinternational.com/Photogr...%20Digital.htm# It takes a long time, but well worth it as you view the whole catalogue at the same time, then at your leisure you can pass all the shots through photoshop to enhance and improve. I have not got the instructions out, but i seem to remember that you can copy negs as well then use photoshop to reverse to positive and print.

Fishing seems to be my favorite form of loafing.

"Even a bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work."

I know the joy of fishes in the river through my own joy, as I go walking along the same river.

What do you think if the float does not dip, try again I think.

Mmm, see your point 'MG'?

It appears here:

I can have fifty 35mm slides scanned to CD for £33.50? I like the idea of doing it myself but feel that a professional scan gives me a better chance, if I do want to PS any of them. Even 150 slides are not going to cost any more than a duplicator with step rings etc., and considerably less than modern film scanner.

Once the job is done, the scanner will be no more use, "film is dead, long live film" Well nearly, they are still screwing the lid down?

Just had a look a film scanners, as an on going option yes, but as my needs are finite, my fathers slides, some of my C/negatives. I will search the loft out first, see how much there is and sort it down to my minimum. Then its 'pro cost' or my time, a scanner and DIY ????

I'm looking forward to going through the 'old mans' photos after so many years, I think :mellow: hang onto the memory :marinheiro: I can do it?
