Thanks. I've been meaning to use braid for a while now. The lack of springyness sounds apealing. One thing that concerns me though, using such high breaking strain, does that have any effect on playing the fish? Or is that just down to what heavyness of rod you are using? I guess no angler ever wants his line to snap so i'm unsure why light lines are ever used (I've been using 4lb mainline for bream over summer)unless they actually do have an effect on playing the fish. I'm guessing striking into the fish should be gentler than using mono due to lack of shock absorbing properties

You've answered your own question really. There are no freshwater rods I know and come to think of sea rods (well beach rods anyway) that you could/can break 15lb line with by pulling on the rod! Its hard enough to break it with a direct pull. Around 11-12lbs is the most force you can exert with any rod using it conventionally ie one hand on the rod butt tucked in and the other on the reel.I know this as Ive tested loads of blanks.Try it yourself with a set of scales if you doubt me.

Added bonus of a heavier BS is simply that you can retrieve snagged lures (good for the wallet) and snagged baited rigs (good for the pike!). The main reason for the choice of braid using diameter though is to maintain some abbraision resistance.Something that despite the misleading claims of some is quite poor.

As for the striking/playing then the braids lack of stretch is nothing but a bonus for a hard mouthed fish such as pike but care must be taken when fishing for other species or using mono hook lengths.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

That reel looks fine but there's no mention of an Instant Anti-Reverse bearing which can help when setting up with drop-offs and setting hooks. You could buy an Okuma Interceptor IBF50 for 30 quid and that comes with an IAR bearing and a 5 year warranty.
