rod choice ?

i have just joined a local club.

i know there is a lot of good sized fish on some of the venues, that can be caught on a single piece of sweetcorn.

i have a leeda assassin III 15-17 foot float rod , and a 12foot carp rod (2.75 tc).

i like to make and use my own floats. and prefer to float fish most of the time.

sweetcorn is one of the best baits on most of the venues for all species.

which rod would you use? ,or would i needa new one between the 2 ?

what would you recommend for fish between 10 to 20lb?

so just in case i hook one of the larger ones....

the float rod seems a bit flimsy (a 8lb tench seemed a bit much for the rod)

the carp rod seems a bit to bulky.

thanks

I float fish most of the time on stillwaters, and if the fish are going much above 4-5lb and/or there are a lot of snags, I use a Wychwood 1.5lb tc barbel rod, which seems to do the job. For about £70 or less you can now get a 1.6lb tc MAP CFS Commercial Power rod which is very light and well-balanced and has a better reel seat than the Wychwood.

A good compromise is a 1¼lb TC Avon rod with an additional quivertip top section for versatility, there are lots to choose from. This won't overpower any smaller fish caught when floatfishing but gives you enough power to deal with carp to 15lb+. About the only disadvantage with this type of rod is that the rod rings usually have no legs and are close to the blank, so if you are using very light float gear in the wet then the line can stick to the blank, making casting difficult. They also won't cope with heavy feeders or leads.

If need be you could step up to the 1½lb or 1¾lb TC "barbel" variants as suggested by DavyR.

A Drennan Mark III Tench rod will do the trick as it is designed for heavy float fishing.

I use a Drennan super specialist for float fishing with lines between 5 and 8lbs or an old 1.5lbTC Daiwa X carp road for lines between 8 and 12 lb

Different floats for different folks!

i've just missed a clearance sale at my nearest tackle shop due to them moving premises.

they were doing 1.75lb tc barbel rods for £19-99 each.

i'll pop in next time i'm in the area , and see what they've got.

got to find the darn place yet. hee

thanks again.
