do you find that the style of hat matters, more trout come to dear stalkers, so I supose skate could preffure a racoon tail hat.

Guest conger tamer

it amazes me how these dumb skate are stupid enough to keep getting caught time after time,i mean all you have to do is drop a bait in the same place every time and bang bungle gets hooked again whoopie i wonder if its the one i caught yesterday???

I had the same view as you having done my share of fishing off the South Coast and Bristol Channel. These days, Bassing or fishing for Smoothounds with light gear is my favourite type of fishing. Uptiding for Cod and Thornbacks off North Somerset is where most of my fishing was done through my teens and early twenties.

I said that I would go for Common Skate one time just to give it a try and 'tick one off' on the species list. Davy kindly invited me and a few others up for the weekend last bank holiday, knowing that this was my view. I caught two Skate, a 120lb male and a 107lb female. Now, I can't wait to get back up to Lochaline, weekend after next to catch another one (or maybe more than one). I had always said one would be enough. Davy explained the night before that everyone who catches one can't wait to get a bait down for another. "Not me", I though, "I'm a light line angler - none of this heavyweight stuff for me, there's no sport in it". How wrong I was!!! As soon as I had one I wanted another. And whatever people say, they do fight - maybe not as aggressively as a smut on light gear, but there's something awe inspiring when the fish takes line from you on eighty pound gear and there's nothing you can do but hang on.

This is the link to the write up I did after my first trip - read and enjoy :D
