Introducing fish...general fishing

We now how a problem in the Shannon system in Ireland. Some *$$hole has introduced chub into the river Inny, which are greatly affecting the trout population within that river. This in turn is going to infect the whole of the shannon system and it's tributaries, and affect the spawning stocks of trout in loughs Sheelin, derravarragh, Ennell, Ree, Allen, Derg and possibly Owel. All because someone decided to either bring live fish from the UK as livebait, (which is illegal in Ireland) or as seed stock because in thier wisdom they thought they would be a nice fish to fish for. This has destroyed a whole ecosystem, balanced for centuries, that has just recovered from the land drainage of the '50s.

 

Introducing species into closed systems without research is bad enough, but to indiscriminately stock into open systems is criminal. We know the damage roach and dace have done (destroying many great Rudd fisheries) which is why livebaiting was banned....to stop accidental introductions.
