Looks like I need to find them (again)

River Kennet, Newbury, Sunday 15th August 2010   A second attempt to repeat the perch success of last week met with similar results to Friday 13th. The favoured swim again produced only crays, no sign of stripeys large or small.   I suppose it was expecting a bit much to simply turn up and catch again, it is a large water and there will be loads of potential places for them to hide. It’s just case of more exploring until I find other swims where they’re comfortable, obviously I was lucky t

Trwynhwrddyn Point, Pembrokeshire   1100 - 1300   Overcast/milky sunshine. Tide going out - high tide about an hour before I started.   3 Bass - all small 12-14inches   3 Fish that had me feeling ridiculously pleased with myself! I rarely do any sea fishing and have no tackle. So with a borrowed spinning rod (thanks Paul) and some pike lures (most of which I think I've found over the years!) I looked a bit of a numptie compared to some other anglers with all the gear, who were launching

Worst day so far this season

River Kennet, Newbury, Friday 13th August 2010   This was a just a short session of a couple of late afternoon hours at the swim where I caught perch last weekend, I was keen to give it another try to see if anything bigger was lurking under the trees.   Not much to report I’m afraid because I blanked, the only thing lurking was a load of signals which took great delight in devouring my lobworms. I even tried the nearby canal lock cut where small perch are guaranteed but it was the same st

Best day so far this season

River Kennet, Newbury, Sunday 8th August 2010   Nemesis is too strong a word but if there’s one NAA venue where I’ve always felt a little disappointed with the results it’s this one. I’ve fished it in prime condition during the Autumn/Winter and had some enjoyable days but I haven’t really found the chub & perch it’s known for. The logical thing to do then was fish for those species in the middle of summer wasn’t it?   Flawed logic maybe but the day felt perfect as I was making sarnies

River Kennet - Nr. Thatcham   0700 - 0930   Cool, overcast with light drizzle. 15ºC. River a little on the low side - but was lower this time last year!   2 Barbel; 7lb 6oz, 6lb 13oz. 5 Chub; 4lb 8oz. 3lb 15oz, 3lb 10oz, 2lb 14oz & a chublet. 6 dace, 1 brownie.   Cracking little trotting session - one of my bigger float caught barbel. Most fish in the last ¾hr having moved a few yards downstream of where I started.

Bristol Avon - 09/07/2010

Decided to fish the same stretch as last time but venture slightly further upstream. Not as exciting as the last time however as it was a hot Friday evening and they were a few too many fisherman and a number of local kids jumping in the river which didn’t help matters! Couple of Chub and Dace caught though.

Summer Pit - CEMEX Yateley   1815 - 2330   Warm, still and overcast. 16ºC when I packed up.   6 Tench: 7lb 2oz, 5lb 13oz, 4lb 7ozX2, 4lb 6oz, 3lb 6oz.   Another cracking evening's float fishing for tincas. ALL fish on meat around 2 rod lengths out - not a touch in the margins. Biggest ever tench from this venue (beating the 7lb 0oz fish from 4 weeks ago!).

Bristol Avon - 06/07/2010

Another exploratory trip to the Bristol Avon this time heading upstream from where I started on my first visit. This stretch looked just as tempting, possibly more although it was also popular with the Barbel fisherman! Think I caught 3 Chub and a couple more Dace, another lovely evening. Saw a number of spots that were screaming to be trotted so I’m looking forward to returning with my pin. Perhaps most exciting of all was peering over a ledge and looking down at a shoal of large Chub with the

Mission Accomplished

River Kennet, Newbury, Saturday 31st July 2010   A quick return trip to the CSAS stretch of the Kennet ostensibly to hand back my exchange permit ‘borrowed’ last Sunday but in truth I wanted another crack at a couple of swims Mike had shown me last weekend.   I had to buy bait and that meant a quick stop by Thatcham Angling. The proprietor is also the custodian of the exchange permits so I hoped that he didn’t recognise me and demand the permit back there and then. All was well so within 1

River Kennet - Nr Newbury   0500 - 0800   Overcast with heavy drizzle for most of the session. 17ºC - river quite low.   2 Chub; 2¼lb & 1½lb. 18 dace, 14 roach and a dozen gudgeon.   Pre-breakfast trotting session in the rain - most notable for my very first sighting of an otter on the Kennet. Paul had just arrived - ½hour after I'd started fishing and had waded out to join me mid-stream. I'd just announced that my bites had dried up and we quickly saw why! The animal wallowed in my

River Kennet - Nr. Thatcham   1800 - 0000   Overcast, 20º -> 15ºC but felt a lot cooler fishing an exposed swim in a stiffish breeze - had the thermals on by 8 o'clock! River a little on the low side.   3 Barbel: 9lb 12oz, 8lb 5oz, 7lb 6oz.   A trio of terrific hard fighting barbel. First fish (the smallest) just after 2100 followed by the biggest just on 2300 with the 8lber on the stroke of midnight as I was about to pack up. All fish on 14mm halibuts

03-04/07/2010 - LRA & River Wylye

Well this was a weekend I was looking forward to as my fishing buddy Alan was coming up to stay and we had two days fly fishing planned. The first day was spent on the Little River Avon on a stretch that I hadn’t fished before but had heard good things about. The fishing wasn’t easy but it was a lovely stretch of river with plenty of potential. We both managed a couple of Trout and Grayling each, mine mostly to a nymph and Alan being stubborn and sticking with a dry fly for most of the day!

Would Sir Like his Hat Well Done or Medium?

River Kennet, Newbury, Sunday 25th July 2010   My first session in exactly 4 weeks so Saturday evening was spent preparing kit, lubing ’pins, buying bait, making sarnies and all the other stuff which would never get done if left until the last minute. It was to be a dawn raid, I was fishing with Mike (Arbocop) and he would have to work Sunday afternoon so the only way to get a decent session in was to start early. That meant a 3:30am alarm.   The venue was the CSAS stretch of the Kennet av

Summer Pit - CEMEX Yateley   1900 - 0445   Balmy, overcast night - min 13ºC but felt warmer in still conditions - and sat under the trees - didn't need a coat or a brolly all session.   9 Tench: best 3, 5lb 11oz, 4lb 13oz, 4lb 12oz. All others between 3¼-4¼lb. 1 Roach.   A busy evening - I had 5 fish including the biggest 2 by 2230 - followed by a quiet night. Kept at it, hoping for a crucian or two to put in an appearance but it was not to be. 5 fish on meat, 4 on 6mm pellet all float f

Bristol Avon - 01/07/2010

I decided that it was about time that I really started to explore the Bristol Avon, especially given how close it is and its reputation for good Barbel and Roach. Instead of walking a stretch I decided to take along my fly rod and target the many Chub that I had spotted here on a brief visit during the close season. Upon arrival I was really surprised to see how clear and full of life the river looked! Quite a contrast to Bath where it is quite slow and sluggish (although undoubtedly full of fis

back to the first ever lake i fished for a second crack at it! Having walked the lake a few times in the last couple of months i knew roughly where i wanted to fish, on arrival there were fish crashing exactly where i thought they would be. I quickly got both rods out and settled down with my book, ten minutes later i had a small common in the net, blank out of the way and there were some high hopes! Although it wasnt to be, only one other small common graced the net and another found an unfor

20-27/06/10 - Lough Ree

Well this was my first visit back to Lough Ree in 5 years and I was looking forward to it immensely. Unlike previous years I actually had some decent fishing equipment this time and also managed to borrow my friend’s echo sounder which I felt would prove to be invaluable given the size of the Lough. As this was a family holiday my fishing times were primarily restricted to the afternoons and early evenings although I did manage one early morning start as well. Surprisingly I was joined for the m

Wye trip 18-20 July

A repeat of last year spending 2 nights in a b&b in Ross-on-Wye - though the river was 2 feet lower than last year, so I didn't know what to expect, as I think barbel like a bit of rain.   On Sunday eve fished a peg in the town stretch. An angler packing up had had 2 barbel, so I took over his swim and was reasonably expectant. He advised me to cast out to the edge of the main flow. Lots of yanks, shakes and bangs, but few real bites. Had 2 chub, and lost a third. I fished an hour into d

Some crayfish activity for first hour or so which then stopped - usually a good sign! 6lber at around 2100 and the smaller fish quite literally at the end - was leaning forward to grab the rod to wind in to end the session when it was wrenched from my hands! Chew Magna Reservoir - 17/06/2010

After spending so much time fishing rivers recently I decided for a change of scenery and another crack at Chew Magna Reservoir for its Rainbow Trout. The last time I had fished there had been spring before the first leaves had appeared on the trees. This time the place was positively bursting with life and looked magnificent on what was a lovely balmy evening. Despite the fact that there were fish rising in front of me straight away I struggled to catch. After three missed takes I eventually ma

River Wellow - 16/06/2010

After fishing the Little River Avon with Vince as my guest on Sunday he kindly invited me to fish on a stretch of the River Wellow that is owned by a syndicate he is a member of. The stretch is upstream of where I usually fish on the Wellow and quite different in character with more slow paced sections and a strange sort of moss that grew on the riverbed. Unsurprisingly the water clarity is just as clear and we were careful to make as little noise as possible when wading upstream. The fishing wa
