  1. hi, i converted to the pole back in july and bought a "budget" 11m setup from Ultimate Angling after the first day of use i never looked back, after 6 trips i purchased a Maver 151 and found it much much lighter and comfortable to use (no prolonged back ache), best fish yet is an 11lb carp which due to me no knowing how much i could bully the fish, took me 45mins to land on size 10 elsatic and 16 hook i constantly out-fish my neighbour who go's with me, but he's adamant he's sticking to a rod n reel i bought a couple of bob nudd "start pole fishing" dvd's and found them very useful for rigs, methods etc etc if you PM me your address i'll send you a copy for the price of the postage all the best steve
  2. my stonfo hook tyer arrived today, on my first attempt i tied a size 18 hook to pefection, its a far better constructed tool than the matchman tier, and with the main body being able to rotate it makes the job easier tied it to some 6lb line ( for ease) and really pulled the knot and it held, looks a pro' knot too!! well impressed thanks for the advice could even do it with a "poorly right index finger" !! i trapped it at work today now to master the sensas looptyer (damn french instructions) all the best steve
  3. cheers guys i'll search for a stonfo one, and practice in front of the TV over xmas.............
  4. which make of matchman tier are you using ? whenever i have bought one it always seems to be a "shop brand" and ultimately doesnt hold the hook tight enough in the jaw, the hook mostly moves up/down when twisting the line down the shank, the tension of the line forces it to do so this is annoying to say the least and the knot simply pulls off when completing i want to master this device, afterall spending £3 against £30 is a no brainer in anyones eyes finding a good matchman tier may prove difficult as like most things nowadays we are flooded with chinese crap on the market which is either shop/un branded and who is going to take a £3 item back and complain, i just think ive got a bad one having just returned to fishing after a 10yr absence, i dont recall struggling with my original matchman i suppose ive answered my own question really i'll keep hunting for a quality named version
  5. hi, i struggle to use the "matchman" hook tier, having bought 3 different makes of the same item i find that they are all of inferior / poor quality and dont actually grip the hook and it slips when making the knot ( 1 x stillwater, 1 x ultimate angling, 1 x shakespeare) i have bought the "drennan" hook tier and have managed to tie hooks ok, but it is more complicated to use, and still doesnt grip very well ive taken up to 1 hr to tie a hook at home the night before using these tiers, and mostly the knot simply pulls away at the final stage... so, my dilema is ......... hooks to nylon (often not exactly what you want) or buy a better tier??? the up market tiers aren't cheap £30 .....but fishing is my kids, smoking, drinking & drugs!! so i dont mind the expense has anyone got experience of the - Sensas Pierotti hook tier or the pro-tie the sensas hook tier apparantly has poor instructions and looks primitive, but i've managed to find a magazine article showing how to use it and the pro-tie uses the dreaded matchman tier (so i would hope it would be of a better quality) and looks space age!! which would you guys recommend, as im ultimately sceptical of the matchman tier? regards steve
  6. After elasticating my new pole, i wanted to try it out hoping to have some elastic stretching moments went to a local commercial and fished worm, and was rewarded with a 2lb 7oz tench, and a mixed bag of perch, skimmers, roach and gudgeon for a total bag of 12lb 5oz i didnt think tench where active this time of year?? must be the changing seasons?? ive had more success in the 2months ive returned to fishing than i ever did in the 15yrs or so i fished before dreading my first dry net day........its gotta come!!
  7. a flask of hot water and a selection of cuppa soups for me and a small bottle of ribena so i can have hot blackcurrant as well
  8. Ive searched around for some stickers for my pole rigs which im starting to make over the winter months........however, after ebaying & googling i cannot seem to find any ready made stickers so........ i've made some if this has been done before then please dont shoot me down, i'm just offering these to people as a neater solution to writing on the winder I'm not after selling them either (f.a.o. forum administrators) The stickers are set out on AVERY L1769 sticky label format on OFFICE 2007 (the format wont allow them to be viewed on OFFICE 2003??) There are 24 / sheet, and show rig length, main line diameter, hook length diameter, hook size and pattern the sheet can be downloaded here as a RAR file A picture of them in use Tight Lines Steve
  9. ah................we have our lines crossed i thought you where talking of nth somercotes the "secret" pond has all the usual fish & is way off the beaten track nr the humber bridge and as soon as planning is granted i think it'll become day ticketrship or member............it has been fished a handfull of times this year by only 3 people ... rumoured (acording to the owner) to have a 40lb+ carp..........but unfortunately tackling up and fishing for big carp just doesnt interest me.........i'll stick to the sub 10 pounders and not get into big rigs and pod setups etc the only pod im interested in is white, has headphones and plays music may try the bain soon, im not after your secrets but are there any good "known" spots??
  10. not sure where abouts station rd is........but the pond we are talking of is down jubilee rd i sat with my neighbour at the brickyard fisheries on saturday (cartwrights ponds), nothing prolific was being caught and the place could do with being dragged into modern times, a bit grotty the pegs are either overgrown or the wooden platforms very very dodgy...........shame as it could be nice there have some fond memories of Fulstow, fishing as a kid, and was there with my brother when the house burnt down!!, never ever had a dry net there even as a clueless kid (im now a clueless adult ha ha !!) but on visiting it the other week, the small pond is un approachable and the large pond was like the north sea!! i too would like to fish the louth canal / tetney lock and local rivers this winter, would love some "Bain" tips, but im afraid i've nothing to trade? hopefully going to fish a "secret" pond in a out of town village on sunday........friend of a friend and all that stuff.........if it comes off i'll post the results...........even better if i manage to elasticate my new Maver pole, its so light it'll be a treat to use it has anyone fished Hunters Lodge in Elsham........ive been on the GY sports telegraph site and it seems to be a popular place
  11. sorry to hear you had a bad day, my neighbour only caught 1 x carp of approx 3lb ish...........?? i must have been lucky for once, although the owner also told us its fishing poor at the moment perhaps now the water temp is dropping and the fish slowing down?? jsut as im getting back into fishing too im away from sunday at milton keynes for a week, but hope to fish on sunday 21st........havent decided where yet yes i have heared of fishsim, ive downloaded the demo but it doesnt work...........it looks good and when the post is all sorted i'll order a copy this post strike is playing havoc with my ebay enterprising ive just won a brand new maver 151 nanolith 14.5m pole on ebay for £375 (£499 new) (625g at 11m) so if you know anyone who wants a {edit note: please post that offer with details in the 'for sale' section. Newt}
  12. no i havent......it always looks way too choppy each time ive biked around it?? also, dont want to get pestered with the "caught owt mister" kids........heared there are some good fish there didnt the stock from the boating lake go in there?
  13. thanks for the link, i shall go look and see what our county has to offer
  14. did you go to the joy of koi?? i bet it was you fishing opposite the island with the big hat?? was going to pop over and chat but never made it i had a belter of a day started off with a 4lb 4oz mirror, then consistantly caught 12 x 3-5lb mirrors all day long with one topping at 6lb 10oz and a 2lb bream was well chuffed and was my best day ever in my life of fishing my neighbour caught 1 carp of about 3lb and that was it i was fishing 6mm punched luncheon meat over a bed of 4mm VDE feed pellets, i occasionally switched to worm, fished out on the pole at about 10m, both on the bottom and about 12" above the bottom my personal best fish to date (didnt realise how fat n bald i really am ha ha ) http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r51/alhtdi/SP_A0037.jpg the venue http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r51/alhtdi/SP_A0034.jpg ( i hooked into something that shot off and wrapped around the platform to the left, my elastic was a full stretch and the platform was rocking as the fish or line hit it, there must be an anchor cable or something ?? i eventually bullied it and lost the hook) cant make it fishing next week as im working saturday and the off to milto keynes for a week on a work course (VolksWagen)
  15. having only fished the joy of koi once, i was impressed water was black and not brown (dont know if that helps??) and about 5ft deep in my swim i fished the peg with the "old" garden shed directly behind me its not pole friendly though, with the pegs being natural and sunken so shipping back was awkward i got there at 7.30 and caught on my first cast without any feed i then cupped in some ground bait and free offerings and was pretty consistantly catching roach to 5oz with some bigger, small crucians (on lifting up the pole??) and a ghost carp then it quietened off from 1 until 4 ..... with more experience i perhaps should realise why? maybe its the time of day or the bait had been eaten, however, i re baited the swim and hit into some nice (for me) elastic stretching carp (about 3lb), finished at 6 pm ish didnt have scales but reckoned i bagged about 15-12lb i was using red maggot, didnt try sweetcorn and pellets didnt do anything (halibut) but they where sonubaits hookers and i thought them to be hard?? i liked the venue because there was no wind at all, nor kids running about, there where a couple of rats scurrying about, but hey its nature, and you have to be watchful of the ducks, they creep up behind you and snaffle your bait, there are toilets and a portacabin with a vending machine 3 maggots in the ducks direction, then a few to your float, keeps them away from your swim im getting bored with cheapside now as its a bit prodicatble and you only seem to get small carp type fish and the odd very small tench, ive had a barbel there and a couple of nice roach yes......i'd like to visit the tetney pond some time im thinking of going to the caistor ponds on saturday morning to watch the match (if they allow it) to see if i can get some pole fishing tips...........im intersted in the baiting techniques of how much / when etc.........i feel i over feed or under feed and just cant keep the swim consistant at least now im back into fishing im thinking it through and trying to differ my style rather than just sitting it out if your going to the "joy" or the farm pond over the weekend then let me know i'll pop for a chat steve
