  1. i used to buy stuff from reel deal and the codfather (quaker fishing tackle ltd ) and always had a good buying experience and used to phone reel deal and order stuff , they were always freindly They were a massive company and im sure they must still be trading or at least i hope so
  2. I found that my 506 reel was brilliant most of the time but for some reason every now and then it would not let the line out freely and i had to help it out by pulling it by hand and couldnt trot the float at the speed i wanted . I found it worse after id caught a fish so i just thought it was the line being bedded in but i still had the same problem at random times , i think that with these reels you need a shallower spool which ive now found in the garage allbeit a plastic one . the deep spool i was using i only filled with about 50 yards of 4lb mono as i seem to remember my dad always doing this because he said about the line bedding in to deep after catching a fish , he also used to half fill his spools with cheap line and pour resin over it to fill the spool out so you only needed 50 or so yards of line to bring the line upto the top of the spool so it could flow out for casting or trotting. so this could have been the reason i couldnt trott properly at times because the line was to low in the spool to flow out smoothly every time , i hope so anyway . Does this sound about right or is there something else that ive missed ? Cheers
  3. I think your right and it can take many years to become accomplished , its about seeing things from a fishes point of view and not mine , like when the water in a lake has dropped a few inches you might be able to see an area of bare earth on the very edge of an island where the carp have grubbed about and exposed the bank and cast a method feeder right tight to it rather than fishing up to the lovely looking lilies to the side . Its definitley about technique and its definitley about intuition and making the right choices and knowing what to change when something isnt working . When you fish a water that you know well you can be be settled into catching before the others have started and that can give you a massive psychological advantage , but when you fish somewhere new its down to thinking quickly and making the right choices based on fishing knowledge so intuition then. Its about applying yourself to different venues as well , when i went to the itchen i didnt really have much experience of rivers because i hadnt fished one for nearly 20 years but after a slow morning i changed my approach and started to work for it by feeding 4 maggots every 20 seconds regardless of whether i was playing a fish or whatever and feeding small balls of liquidised bread every 5 mins and although the bread seemed to attract a few more tiny brownies in the closing few hours i managed 6 big chub and 5 or six decent grayling , Im sounding like im blowing my own trumpet here but what it boiles down to is just years of angling experience and some people learn slowly and some people get it quickly but we all get there if we work for it and can take direction from more experienced anglers. Ive learnt more from this site from anglers with more experience than me than i ever would have learned on my own. Whatever you think you know about angling there is always someone out there that knows something you can benefit from , thats the magic of angling and why we dont get bored because we are always improving
  4. Sorry chris i meant to reply to arbocop but must have replied to your post by mistake
  5. Hi was it you that kindly gave me a lesson in casting on your browning revolver as im useless at remembering names , if it was then many thanks it was enlightening experience and not as easy as you made it look
  6. Yea i threw my landing net out sliding it along my hand and forgot to grip the end and it launched out into the flow and i went into the water like a shot before it dissapeared down river , amazingly i still landed the fish which was my second biggest at 4lb 11oz , when i saw you or the person you were with i saw one of you had just landed a nice brownie i think Like you say i only managed myself to meet a few of the people that were there as we seemed to have an amazing good amount of room between us , i only manage to fish the upper sections and when i was driving back down at the end i passed alot of water that i should have tried , but i think i was spoilt enough at the top and couldnt have enjoyed it any more than i did. Again thanks rusty for an amazing day and thanks to whoever it was that gave me a lesson on his browning revolver pin , i sort of learned a lesson in casting one of those things , you made it look very easy
  7. The website is safe and if it wasnt your virus software would let you know It will feel heavier than a quality 13ft rod but certainly a lot lighter than if you had a 22ft rod (7m) No its not take apart as its a whip
  8. Your probably right but the 7m whip should be about right i think
  9. Although not quite the last day it was my last day and also my first day on a river in over 20 years and i had an amazing day at the itchen saturday (photos below)and after a slow morning but with 1 grayling over 1lb the afternoon 2 oclock onwards saw 5 more grayling 2 of which were over 1lb with 1 being 1lb 11oz and then an amazing run of chub from only 3 more different spots ,i changed my approach and fed very little (4 maggots ) but very often (every 20 seconds) and even when playing the fish still kept the trickle of maggots going in and had 6 chub from 2lb 13oz and 2 over 4lb one was 4lb 13oz and then as it got darker my last trot through ( last 10 as i couldnt drag myself away) i hooked a huge chub that at times just felt snagged on the bottom and with 0,12mm line took nearly 15 mins to land and was the best of the day at 5lb 5oz Absolutely the best day ive had for many years , such a beautiful place with beautiful fish and was a lovely break from my matchfishing curcuit . Fished a match on the sunday and came second to last , cant have it all i suppose
  10. There are but there not gonna be carbon and for the type of fishing your doing you want as light as possible , but heres that link again to a 7m whip full carbon , i think for this money it has to be your best option. http://nmpwholesale.co.uk/7mfullcarbonamba...html?cPath=3412
  11. Yes for speed fishing for roach or skimmers this will be fine but if theres any possibility of hooking carp then you will need a take apart pole .
  12. Like what has been said before , your not gonna get anything carbon and 8m for that money and certainly not a brand name but ive found this below that is full carbon and 7m , i dont know if its any good but being that its full carbon it has to be better than anything else at this price . http://nmpwholesale.co.uk/7mfullcarbonamba...html?cPath=3412
  13. That is a lovely picture and one which im hoping to take myself if im one of the very lucky people to go. I absolutely loved the itchen fish in so to fish for these bream and tench on such a beautiful stillwater for 3 days must be an experience and a half
  14. If you do do matches week in and week out you get very familiar with your pole and the way elastic works , now a few years ago alan scotthorne who is an innovator of so much we matchfisherman do today started using doubled up elastics and then steve ringer tried it and agreed that it worked better in lighter elastics and now it has a big following . Alan scotthorne doesnt use things that serve no purpose and i know that he and steve ringer do use doubled elastics as do alot of matchfisherman . Now the argument for double elastic is that say you are using a double 4 and hook a 5lb carp then on the initial strike and first few inches the elastic behaves very soft and avoids hookpulls , then as the elastic stretches it progressively becomes more like a no10 ( not a no 8 as you would think ) but wont bottom out as quickly as a no8 or 10 so you do feel as thou your using an elastic with a rating between i would say 5 and 10 . The main thing i have found is that when you are about to net the carp holding your top kit up in the air it traps it in position better and stops the carp from diving and starting a run . I find that blue hydro will just keep stretching and stretching because the fluid inside stops this trapping action so you have to stand on your box to net the fish or add your no4 section which just gives you less control . Its worth bearing in mind thou that these double elastics only really work when using double 3 up to a double 7 max and then your far better off using black hydro with a pulla bung. In the winter thou i do use white hydro as im not trying to rush things and just want the smoothest fight i can get , but this would only be on a carp venue , if i were after silvers and small f1s as well as the bigger fish then i would always go for my double 4 or 5 as i dont want to bump the smaller fish. Just realised that this is getting long and it is a difficult thing to describe and the simplest answer is just try it and see how you go but never do anything that you have no faith in and it would always be better to stick to what you know and what works for youself .
  15. Thinking about it your right and its not like the man walking over the bridge was throwing rocks in my swim and it was probably more like i was using it as an excuse for not doing well , its not like i was bagging up before he started walking across anyway and like you say the fish must be used to it by now as why would it be such a good spot to catch them from in the first place if people walking across really spooked them that much Some of the best results can be in the margins when ducks and geese are making a hell of a noise there and splashing around because the fish dont expect to be fished for and rarely are , so maybe as long as its a noise or disturbance that the fish are used to and expect then no real harm is done and we just like to vent our anger or make it an excuse before really thinking about it
  16. When you have the fish under some sort of control and you want to get some elastic back you just pull out enough so that you can shorten the elastic enough so you can get the net to it without having to stand up and stretch your arm high up and then you clamp the elastic between your hand and the top kit , if the fish decides to run you can just let the elastic slip throu your grip. It takes a bit of getting used to but once mastered it means you can use lighter elastics and lighter hooklengths so is a real advantage , Its especially effective in the winter when bites are few and far between and your not rushing to get fish in and you want to make sure of landing every hooked fish as only 2 or 3 bonus fish might win you the match.
  17. I was in a match today and fishing tight to one of the bridges on a snake lake and its common courtesy on this lake not to walk across when a match is on , but one of the anglers talking on his mobile was just in a trance concentrating on his call and pacing back and forth over the bridge 4 times and spooked the fish , i saw them stir the bottom up as they went . Im not the type to make a fuss so i didnt say anything but it was either blind ignorance or bad sportmanship on his part
  18. Finally figured out how to get the photos from yesterday on to here , i was only allowed to put 5 on as otherwise it took me over 500k of upload size but these are the best fish , grayling 1lb 11oz and various chub to 5lb 5oz , im not sure which was the biggest but i think it was the last one. Once again thankyou to rusty and also the man who gave me a lesson at casting on his browning revolver centre pin , he made it look ridiculously easy but when it was my turn i found it was not sorry i cant remember your name but it was nice to meet you and thanks again
  19. The 10-12 sounds ok but 14-16 is a bit heavy and i guess you lost a few fish after hooking them , ideally for this size of carp or f1 i use daiwa white hydro but you could try double 4 which gives you good initial stretch and then strengthens up as you play the fish so you get best of both and less lost fish , also preston slip no8 would be good . Im off to a match now fishing for similar sized f1s and will be using the white hydro , hardly ever lose a fish on this stuff and i use a pulla bung so if i hook a bigger carp theres no problem landing this either .
  20. Thankyou rusty for a truly great day and one i wont forget for a long time. It is a stunning looking roach , really bright silver Im having trouble getting my photos on this site , when i go to upload them nothing happens , im not very good at this kinda thing , can someone guide me on how to do it cheers. I spent all the day on the upper stretches and had 6 chub to 5lb 5oz and the smallest was 2lb 13oz which was already a pb then they just got bigger 3lb 7oz 3lb 13oz 4lb 3oz 4lb11oz then after 10 final casts and the light fading i hooked my biggest fish which at times seemed like it was snagged and just hugged the bottom and it took me 15 mins to land on a 0.12mm hooklength. A few others have commented on the power of these fish and i really thought that last fish was gonna be a barbel but im completly made up with these chub Also had 5 lovely graylings the biggest of which was 1lb 11oz and 2 others over 1lb and these fish really scrap as well , lovely fish I was worried about one of the grayling as it didnt seem to recover even thou i held it in the water for a bit before letting go but it just floated upside down down the river and i followed it and feared the worst until it just suddenly righted itself and shot off which was a relief Thoroughly enjoyed today and the peace and beauty of the place and good to meet everyone . Back to match fishing in the morning on a snake lake which wont quite feel as good as today, but ive got next year to look forward to
  21. I think it was this reservior that matt hayes and mick brown fished on total fishing and if so it is stuffed with huge roach bream hybrids and they also caught big proper roach and bream They rowed a boat out and pre baited with a massive amount of old maggots and groundbait and then back on shore they cast their feeders over the top of this feed and the rest is history as they had no idea of what they were gonna catch because no one had coarse fished it before.
  22. If anyone wants a wychwood rocket spod rod 3lb tc ive just found one in the garage , it was a gift from an uncle a few years ago who thought i was a carp angler and ive never used it so it is as new and i could bring it along tommorrow I think 40 pounds is fair
  23. That is really good for 50 , your not gonna beat that anywhere and is better and less hassle than second hand
  24. Thanks nicholas that makes sense to me and will make the day alot easier and like anderoo says at the end of the day if i feel the need i can settle in somewhere and quiver Thanks guys
  25. I agree with scopex that its better to get a longer pole than your actually gonna use because they normally handle better at their shorter lengths as opposed to buying say an 8m pole and using it at 8m Also as scopex says you are then better equipped when you do go to other venues. I think what your looking for is something around a 16 to 18 elastic rating even thou you will not be using anything more than 10 on the lake your fishing at the moment but this will mean that the pole will have a more solid construction without sacrificing to much in the lightness , and again will be usefull when you fish elsewhere as its more all rounded .
