  1. thanks very much, planning to try it out next weekend
  2. Right i know this may sound very odd but i suddenly had an idea, if you were fishing fairly close in the margins on the float, and you got a big 2-litre coke bottle, emptied it and cleaned it out, , cut it in half, , drilled a small hole in the bottom and put in say half a pint of maggots, and somehow put a stick in it or hung it on an overhanging branch and either pre-baited a swim that way or just had it like that whilst you were fishing for the day would that work. Do you get what im saying?? Haha i know it sounds weird but i just thought it would be a good way to keep maggots falling in to your swim regularly without overfeeding it, maybe get the fish on the drop, anybody tried anything like this? Cheers
  3. thanks very much, there are no features such as islands, but it is very deep as it is an irrigation pond, would it better to go in the deepest part in the middle or in the margins, but the margins are the same all the way round, reeds, so wouldnt know where to start really. Also there is a small pontoon about two rods lengths out, would this be good to aim for?? Cheers
  4. A local estate pond has been very badly stocked. There are lots of small roach but only the very rare large carp or bream. They are in there but just in small numbers. As i love fishing this particular pond can anybody give me any advice on how to try and catch one of these fish, im thinking a very smelly groundbait to attract them and a bright hookbait. Any advice?? Cheers
  5. Ok thanks, will try and find somebody to go with, thanks for the info. If need be will put it off until im a bit older, i wont start this year at least though. Cheers
  6. thanks very much thats very useful
  7. I am 16 and have been fishing since i was about eight. Caught most species of fish but never been river fishing once, so have missed out on barbel, chub and river pike. Always wanted to catch a river pike as i guessed they would be very powerful, possibly even more so than stillwater pike but never thought i would be up for it. Never ever been fishing for pike before but what if i had a spinning rod, spinners (crush the barbs down) , 6lb mainline and obviously a wire trace, would this be acceptable to start fishing for pike in rivers? But one thing that concerns me is if i caught the pike, sadly i have no family or friends that fish for pike so would have no-one to show me how to unhook it or anything. Would a landing net, pair of needle nose pliers, and a pair of forceps be enough? Also i would crush the barbs on the spinners. I know these fish are very powerful and can bite a grown mans arm off if they are big enough, no point in taking a risk so thought id ask your opinion before i started fishing for pike. Any info, or if you dont think im ready please just say, wont be offended, id rather you were honest. Thanks, davedave
  8. Only ever used this bait on the whip on canals before, is it effective throughout winter as a big and small fish bait? Say on the quivertip, a piece of breadpunch, can you hook it like when you fish on the pole or does it have to be hair rigged? Anyone had nice carp or bream in winter on ledgered bread punch??? Any info please
  9. thankyou, will definitely try this
  10. What fish was that? Am i mistaken or did that look like a trout?? Should know but dont have a clue!
  11. I know roland did a similar post recently on a bobbin for under £20, but it thought instead of starting a new topic within a topic i would make my own. I will not pay any more than £5 for a bobbin, which is basically a colourful piece of plastic with a chain coming off it, granted some have lights in them but i still dont see why they are so expensive. Anybody know where i can either buy a cheap one for under £5 or preferably can anybody tell me how to make my own. I have a basic monkey climber which i made myself from a piece of plastic tubing, but it keeps catching on the line when i strike into a bite and it will do for now but long term it isnt really ideal. Any info please, thanks
  12. Ive been pleasure fishing for most species on local lakes, canals and ponds, for the last eight or so years. I still love it but am thinking of starting a spot of match fishing. Is it all expensive groundbaits and thousand pound poles or is it more than that? How would you start getting into it? Any advice please? Thanks
  13. ive heard pulling a treble hook through will show you whats down there, if it comes up with silkweed, you know theres a lot of silkweed etc etc etc, never tried it myself but heard it somewhere, hope it helps
  14. thanks for the advice and links, will try fishing half a lobworm on the quivertip to start with, maybe changing to spinning, see how it goes
  15. A local estate pond has some very impressive perch up to 5 pounds 8oz, i've caught loads of perch before but none over about a pound. Theyre really lovely hard fighting fish and would like to try and catch some bigguns this autumn. What is the best approach for the larger ones; spinning, legering, float fishing, worms, maggots, livebait????? Any advice on baits, tackle, methods and info please
  16. thanks for the advice, very useful, had a horrible feeling id left it too late, oh well try next year. Serious perch, carp and chub time i reckon
  17. Motherless minnows, signal crayfish, ummmmmm
  18. ok thanks, ill get the fly swatter ready! Now its getting colder im just going to keep my maggots outside i reckon.
  19. A handful of maggots escaped from my tackle box in the house today, what will they do? Please say all it will be is they will go into casters, and then there will be a few flies around, or do they go into the woodwork or anything like that? Has it happened to anybody before?? Probably being paranoid but i thought id better check, thanks
  20. I'd love to catch a river carp, i bet they fight really hard. Lovely fish
