  1. Judging by the thread title, I was expecting something like . . . . . 'A pike swims into a bar, and the barman said . . . . . . . .
  2. This is what I've been using for years, I must have made them over 10 years ago. Simply push a ladies hairgrip into the slot in the top, and secure the hairgrip with a drop of superglue. Then, tie a lenght of braid, or similar, to the eye at the bottom of the bobbin and fix the other end to your bank stick. The top of the bobbin is removable. to add split shot or placticine etc, for extra weight if required. Costs pennies but will last for years. Bobbins
  3. Sinking mono . . . . . . . simple, dilute washing-up liquid solution.
  4. I'm looking for a half decent rod, about 11' or 12' long, that I can carry easily in a large rucksack along with a small Vango tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat etc. My plan for the beginning of next season (or in the Summer) is to disappear, on foot for a few days or longer, and tackle some previously unexplored & unfished sections of my local River. I need the rod to handle mainlines from 3lbs to 7-8lbs for catching large Dace/Roach up to double figure Barbel etc, and figure that 1.25lbs test curve would be ideal.
  5. Hi Folks, What's the best current telescopic rod with a 1.25lbs test curve? Any suggestions?
  6. Hi John, Thanks very much for you reply to my post. Much appreciated. My query was very much concerned with the possibilty of toxins created by the burning butane. I have a similar heater to the one pictured in my original post. It was advertised as a bivvy heater, but I couldn't find any warnings contained in the accompanying paperwork regarding the emission of toxic gasses/vapours. Does burning butane create carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide, both or neither? It must be remembered that carbon monoxide is heavier than air and if produced inside a 'closed' bivvy, will begin to fill said bivvy from the ground up, and a sleeping angler in a bedchair, being closer to the ground, would be in a position of danger. Whilst, like yourself John, I wouldn't retire into my sleeping bag and leave my heater burning as I slept (not even on a low heat), there may be others who will, and without being sufficiently informed/warned in advance may not be aware of the apparent dangers, and consider it acceptable. That being said, I don't recall hearing of or having read of any anglers being found in their bivvies as a victim of carbon monoxide poisoning. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about caravans, camper vans, canal boats etc. By the way John, your suggestion regarding a hot watter bottle is most sensible, but an open bivvy in sub-zero temperatures . . . . . . .brrrrrrrrrrr not for me I'm afraid, I just aint that tough Black Rabbit
  7. Why bother to trying to re-invent the wheel? http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=obse...md=1&_clu=2
  8. Just wondering, butane gas powered Bivvy Heaters (such as the type in the picture), just how safe are they in regards of fumes etc when the gas is burning? especially when a 'closed' Bivvy can be considered a 'confined' space. Anyone got any views?
  9. Hi Guys, I looking at prchasing a TFG Force 8 Two Man Bivvy (see attached piccy) for Spring, Summer 7 autumn sessions, usuall 2 or three nights at a time. Anyone got experience of this particular bivvy? good points / bad points? worth getting or avoiding? Any comments or views would be most welcome. Thanks in advance BR
  10. Okay, I see. These youngsters deserved to be robbed because they were fishing a river in the closed season! But it would be an outrage if they were robbed whilst fishing a lake, pond or canal. Fishing rivers during the closed season is what some kids do, they don't think about dates etc I'm in my fifties now, and as a kid I, along with my friends, fished our local river during the closed season without realising it, and without the intention of comitting an offence. I know that I'm not the only person on here who did so when they were a kid. I subsequently became a life-long angler and have speny a tidy sum on 40 odd years of rod licences and Angling Club memberships. We should be encouraging youngsters who take up the sport rather than point a finger and lambast them for fishing out of season on a river, whilst at the same time it would be perfectly ok to fish a still water. When I see a youngster on a river, rod in hand, staring studiously a a float, I hope that they too become a life-long angler and as such, when I'n gone, become a future custodian and protector of the waterways that I grew up on, fished and loved. C'mon, when you think about it, children really ARE our future! Rant Over

  12. Well I guess that they're either a Secret Society, or they no longer exist. If the case is the latter, who has their waters now?
  13. Anyone out there know anything about the Phoenix AC, Bedford. They would appear to have a couple of stretches of the Gt Ouse above Bedford. I can find no reference to Phoenix AC on the internet, do they still exist?
  14. Here's a few pics of what the stretch between Gt Barford and Blunham looked like in April last year. Unfortunately I'm not a member of LAA so don't know what ti fishes like. All I know is that it's very peaceful along this stretch and don't think I've ever seen anyone fishing it.
  15. Does the LAA still have a section of the River Gt Ouse in Bedfordshire?
  16. I prefer to use a 'full on' rugby tackle. guaranteed to stop a fleeing assailant.
  17. Sure, could you not use a suitably sized pellet band to attach a prawn to the hook?
  18. George, as an duffer in my fifty-second year, I just wanted to to say well done. It's refreshing to see a young lad with such positive direction, and so passionate about their fishing, especially when the media are so quick to focus on the negative side of the youngsters of today. If you were my son I'd be very proud of you, as I'm sure your parents already are. I wish you all the best and a very successful future. Tight lines. Black Rabbit
  19. Sorry to hear about your diabetes. My missus was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 40+ years ago aged 12. A A couple of years ago She managed to get on a DAFNE (Dosage Adjustment For Normal Eating) course at our local hospital. It changed her life & the was that she managed her diabetes. Try this link for more info http://www.dafne.uk.com/ See if there are any courses in your area. Regarding reels, I'm still using a Shimano Aero Match MkIII and it ticks all my boxes.
  20. Surely some mistake? Had a 2/34lb Perch weighed on VERY accurate/reliable scales, was more like 13" long nowhere near 17"
  21. I have recently acquired one of the above. It's rated for lines 3 - 7lbs. Does anyone know what test-curve these rods are? I have a feeling it's around 1.5lbs but not sure. Tried Google but no luck. By the way, first fish landed with it was a 6lb 3oz Gt Ouse Chub so I can't complain. Thanks in advance
  22. I believe Dick Walker was a smoker, it didn't seem to affect his catches though.

  24. Does anyone know what tackle Dick Walker was using when he caught Clarissa? ie, what type of rod did he use? what test curve was it? what reel? what strength line did he use? what hook lenght/terminal tackle? what size hook? C'mon, someone has the answers I'm sure. Thanks in advance
