I am a very keen all round angler who loves it when the winter comes and my Tench Rods get put away and out come my dusty Pike Rods.......Sheer bliss.
I am very reluctant to fish for anything else during the winter months as i get into a pike mad frenzy, however when we had that rather bitter period at the start of febuary, my local Pike Lakes/Res' where froze over so a friend of mine swayed me to have a dabble for the Chub on our local-ish river to which i went on a freezing evening reaching -14 by the time we had left, needless to say my hands were frozen, the metal frame of my seat didnt help either, on this occasion i had 2 bites in which i missed
Within a few days the lakes had thawed and was back piking catching various pike to 16lb until i had 2 blanks on the trot, fed up with the failure upon me i thought the next session i get in will see me back on that same stretch of river for the chub, and had great success. Within finishing work at 14:00 and fishing from 15:00 to 17:05 i had 3 quality chub, The first went 7lb 1oz ( my new PB by 9oz ) needless to say i was extatic in fact once the scales showed it went over 7 i had that feeling you only get every now and again when you catch a worthy fish and yes i did have the shakes.. the next came 15 minutes after at 6lb 6oz and then at 17:00 i had another at 6lb 5oz.
So sometimes however much you love to fish for your favourite species a change can pay greatly and short sessions can also be very productive as long as you are there in the chosen species feeding times.
Looking forward to a few more Pike sessions before the rods hibernate once again, however as you may understand i have to cram in a few chub session too and luckily due to certain feeding times by pike and chub i can fit both in on the same day.
Out of respect for the friend i am not going to discuss location as we have both seen how this can destroy venues from their former glory, hope you can appreciate this.
