  5. I didn't want to jump into your discussion on the close season as my issues are slightly diverting somewhat from the original topic, but it is an issue that I feel so strongly about, and in a way is relevant to what is being discussed now. I felt that I had to post. First of all I agree with a close season and adhere to this practice, but my gripe is that there is no point in giving the fish and banks a rest for three months in the interest of fish health and conservation only to destroy all that good work in the following nine months. I know from reading the posts on this site (and some of the names appear again and again) that out there are what I would call true anglers, in love with the sport and wanting only what is best for it. However, and this is what sickens me, there are so many so called anglers out there that in the fishing season pursue not only the sport but some kind of sick inclination to spoil everything that crosses their path. An angler with every ring in his keepnet showing in the water with the top four rings totally out of the water, simply chucking in 3lb+ chub ( thats not the way to do it..F*** off was the reply) Fair enough if you dont know exactly the correct way to handle a fish, common sense still surely tells you.....gentle, careful etc etc Anglers catapulting swans and ducks as they have come into their swim for some free nosh. Opening week this year on the River Dove, in a beautiful traquil field full of sheep, an angler packs up and leaves the bank and six empty cans of Stella. It fair broke my back picking up his litter and taking it home for him. The endless litter and line, and god knows what else, I could go on but I wont bore you. Its these people that give angling a bad name, and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. Angling would have a better chance of survival if people would just stop, think and act damn sight more responsible. Will it ever change........
  6. Sorry to hear about the Garden Gate......Last week someone nicked my nets from off the Garden. Any ideas on drying nets in a shed without stinking the place out ???
  7. Theres always loads of different centrepin reels for sale on http://www.ebay.co.uk, under sports and then fishing.
  8. Top advise from the last two posts, but its still tricky. I remember as I was there not so long ago. I did do a couple of other things that I found useful. One was that I started fishing for bits, using small elastic and fishing no more than four metres out. Once I got the hang of hitting the bites and not striking pulling tackle, fish and all out of the water I started fishing further and further out. Once I got the hang of things I started fishing with bigger elastics and bigger tackle targeting the bigger fish. Landed my first 5lb carp a couple of weeks ago, what a buzz, and well worth all the tangles and water slapping,, you'll know what I mean. One last thing, I bought Bob Nudds guide to pole fishing which helped no end and also got loads of tips from the Angling Times. Just do a bit at a time and then extend everything as you get more control and feel more confident. Dont forget to look for PYLONS and ELECTRICITY cables before you start fishing.
  9. I know from keeping pond fish that if you introduce Carp to any degree that you have to seriously upgrade the filter system as they produce a massive amount of waste compared to other fish....Maybe thats a valid point or just a way for Mr shopkeeper to sell more pumps and filters etc ??? As for sweetcorn, Isn't something to do with the high amounts of starch in corn. Not sure if this is right or even the right ingredient, but I'm sure that I can remember reading something along these lines.
  10. Hello everyone. Its absolutley hammering it down outside and I'm at work 7am to 7pm all weekend. Still cant stop staring out of the window wishing I was fishing. Anyone braved the elements this weekend with a story to share. If I cant do it then I may aswell read about it. Thanks everyone for fascinating me with your topis and postings - Great site
  11. Polly, Kegworth is on the Leicestershire/Nottinghamshire Border, I think the water is controlled by either Long Eaton Victoria or Long Eaton AA, but not sure. But think its probably miles too far for you to travel Peter, No probs, never understood the culling think although I've read about it a few times. I've had pike taking roach off my pole upto 7lbs which I know are no specimens, but I have heard of and seen anglers fishing for Pike taking fish of 20lb plus, rumour has it of a fish this year of 30+...Now not sure about that. It really is full of fish though, and pike seem to thrive there although they are a pain especially hooking into them on pole and getting smashed, or even worse sitting on my platform inches above the water and something resembling Lake Placid jumping between my legs...That was scary. Anyone fishing this weekend

  14. Newt, so what fish do you catch in the US. Sorry if thats a daft question, but never really thought about it before. Well the reason I ask is that I have just read the 'longest silence' by Thomas Mcguane, its about this guys life of fishing in the US and tells a pretty amazing tale or two. (edit note - answered by email to avoid hijacking this thread more than I already did. Too serious a and valuable a topic for that - Newt) [ 13. November 2002, 10:32 PM: Message edited by: Newt ]
