  1. More comments you guys may relate to from people ignorant in the art of mullet fishing. "your not going to eat those are you" "there is hundreds down there mate!" "their mackerell aren't they? "whats that mashed up in that bucket" "You need s##it on the hook to catch those mate" Just a few smaples of what I have had already!
  2. I'll be out this weekend and giving it my all with temps coming up quite nicely all looks good! Its always cloudy here in the mornings and hot in the afternoons. Just itching to give it another go! Only thing I am not looking forward to is the holiday makers. I am going to be handing out mullet leaflets this weekend to hopefully stop the same repetitive questions. Maybe get a tieshirt with the following written on the back "These fish are called mullet I am using bread to catch them" "Please do not disturb" Its ok when you get asked once but by the 100th time you start to get a little touchee.
  3. I haven't caught any tench or barbel but fish for carp on the same gear as the mullet and have to say the mullet wins hands down!
  4. Also I took my biggest mullet about 20 years ago in Spain on the Costa Del Sol when I was just a nipper. I fished a harbour in a place called Porta Bunose near San Pedro and Marbella. Totally illegal to fish there I belive and I used to get down there early before the security guards arrived. Most of the mullet in that harbour wre huge and usually got a bite as soon as your bread hit the water. Best was 8LB 8oz! But like I said was really to easy and the fish seem to behave totally diferent to over here.
  5. Andrew we do a bit of Carp and coarse fishing as well and know a couple of great lakes if the mulleting is a bit slow? Don't forget PC Libeys boat caught mullet that still stands at over 10lb! Caught in Portland Harbour just next door.
  6. Not bad but the record for Weymouth is well over 7Ib. What is the biggest out of the Medway by hook & line?
  7. I think the reason the mullet are in such large numbers in my harbour is that they are totally protected from nets along with bass & sea trout!
  8. BREAMAGAIN make sure you remember to upgrade your gear when you come down here. There not going to be like those Medway minnows you know!
  9. Andrew get ready for some of the best mullet action you have ever had! They are packed in that habour so tightly at the moment they can hardly move! Looks like we are in for a good year! My main goal is to beat my PB of 6lb this time around!
  10. Yesterday I fished with two other friends and was only one who blanked. One of my friends caught a 3lb and a 1 1/2lb fish and my other friend caught a nice bass on bread. Andrew the water was so clear yesterday you could see the mullet taking your bread under the surface. Hoping to get some pictures up later.
  11. Ah its easy in Spain they don't count. Look forward to it in July and definately up for the Indian afterwards!
  12. Yes Andrew is going to come down to see me in June for a session in the harbour. I reckon will we get his personal best up to at least 4lb then.
  13. Had my second mullet session of the year and what a session it was! I took 3 fish in a short 4 hour trip. The best was about 3/1/2lb and fought like hell. It Managed to get round a jetty pillar at one point and I was pulling about half a ton of weed with it. God knows how I managed to get the thing in. Broke my landing net as well. I missed loads of smashing bites and really should have had more. Good start to the season though I'm happy! I have been beating the winter blues by doing some carp and pike fishing but nothing compares to the fighting power of the mullet. Got to be the most powerful fish pound for pound that I have ever come across both sea and freshwater!
  14. Heard there were it least 4 people fishing Weymouth Harbour for mullet last weekend and lots of fish now in the harbournow! Having another go this week if we get any good days!
  15. Had a go yesterday! No luck though not even a nibble. Lots of big thins crusing around but didn't see any thick lips. Was a bit cold too. Maybe I will leave it a couple of weeks yet!
  16. Any bets on whos going to land the first one!!! Chippy normally does well where is he?
  17. Had my first mullet on the 17th Apr last year on floating crust! So see if I can do the same next weekend!
  18. My mate pulled out of going yesterday so I did a bit of carping instead. Probably go next week when the water temp comes up just that little bit more!
  19. Thanks Leon. Yes I have experienced those crabs as well and the snipped hooklengths and thats on a float. This might be a bit over kill but how amount using a PVA Bag attached to a two hook patanoster rig that is high enough to keep the crabs away from your hook bait?
  20. Hi everyone I am back! New year and new mullet season. Last year I narrowly missed out on winning the mullet trophy at my local club to the man who has won it more years than I can care to imagine. Weymouth Angling Club has a trophy for the best 5 mullet caught and by the end of August I had the best mullet on the board and lots of good fish between 4-5lb just behind them. I thought it was in the bag and with the colder weather coming on decided to quit for the year. Unfortuately the main mullet man at the club Mick Channon managed to beat me at the post with a late run of good fish even as late as October. Mind you it was touch and go and he did have to take 3 days off work to do it now that’s what I call dedication. Well done to Mick but if Jim Roper could just let him know it he won’t be so lucky this year it would be much appreciated. Last week I walked down to the harbour and saw some good thins to 4lb and some thicks mouthing the bottom which looked encouraging. Temps have increased since then and with quite a warm day in prospect today I am going down to give it my first bash! I do find low water to be more productive at this time of year because the shallow water seems to heat up a little more and often will bring them onto the feed. This year I have invested in a quiver tip rod and I have been told by a very experienced mullet fisherman that used to be chairman of the mullet club that fishing for them tight on the bottom produced more fish than any other method. I think I am going to try to use a open ended swim feeder and fish for them like you would big Roach. Any one tried this concept before? Also I thought this year we might have a little competition between us all to see who produces the most fish this year and also who gets the biggest grey. What do you think?
  21. When we have had a down pour like yesterday and the river is very coloured I have been told that river piking is almost impossible. In your experience do you find this to be true? Thanks for all the good advice by the way I have taken note!
  22. Hopefully doing some river Piking at my local river tomorrow. Normally I fish with a float and free ledger outfit on the lake but is there any different tactics required for a river? Any advise would be much appreciated!
  23. Thanks for the advise I had some really long forceps but I feel I need a decent wire glove as well. Holding the fish under the gill covers is suppose to be the way to go but being inexperienced and seeing my first pike in the flesh for the first time was a daughting task especially with the hooks embedded so deeply. It was bleeding from its gill covers and I seemed to be doing it more damage then good getting tring to get the hooks out. I will strike as soon as I see that flaot move in the future thanks. I must admit this is the first piking I have ever done and normally sea fish for mullet and bass. its all a learning curve again. What other unhooking gear do you think I could have to help? I was using semi-barbed hooks but prehaps an 8 is too small?
  24. I have just started to do some piking at my local lake and was asking for a bit of advise? I caught my first pike yesterday about 10lb on a deadbaited sea bream using an 8 kamason wire trace rig and a polarise carp leager float. The only thing was I have been told by many people to let the fish run once then strike on the second run. I did this but was shocked to see the fish had totally sallowed the rig to the point where I could only see its first treble about half way down its thoat. I must admit bite indication was not that special with this rig and although the float moved about abit I was never that sure if the fish was on or not? I had to cut the trace in the end and throw it back in! Any suggests on what I am doing wrong?
  25. Anyone seen the mullet article in this months sea angler it is quite a spread with some interesting tips and ideas. I fear they may have gone now but looking forward to next year and fishing the Med for them in Nov.
