Now then Chris - I'm gonna have to have words with you about putting piccies of my banker swims on t'net!
BTW - I reckon that's a bream in your photo - often see them up there.....

Really not sure they can be Lambourn grayling - they have always shown on CSAS at Hambridge - but never got further down - and these ones would have had to go over a fairly sizeable weir too.
Yes Rusty - occupied - frustratingly all the places I wanted to trot were occupied by guys fishing the lead. One was packing up as I too was getting ready to leave - he had blanked. I asked if I got have a couple of trots through as he packed up and had a dace 1st cast - shortly followed by the 2lb chub!

Cheers Viney!

We picked the right bit though - guys further downstream struggled by and large...

Chris - did you really walk all the way from the weedrack to the perch hole with full kit?? You're mad!
-
Happy now, Paul!?
-
Patience dear boy - I was at work till 2200 last night and out tonight - I'll put them up tomorrow!!

Hi Rusty - was my biggest dace from here for over 6 years - Jan 05 when Paul and I had a real Red Letter day catching simply dozens of big fish - it got to the point that we were only weighing those that looked to be over 12oz! My biggest 3 that day went 14,15 & 16oz. Counting up at the end of the day we'd had 95 dace between us with hardly a fish under 8oz - AWESOME.

After today's wash out I'm really pleased I went yetserday!!!

Well done for sticking at it - good to see the perch back in that swim as well (both Paul and I have had 3's from here in the past - fishes really well as it gets dark - or at least used to!) Surprised you didn't tempt a bigger chub from that first swim (they live in the eddy on the far bank! )

I'm wondering if your's is reading a little low? Mean ATs have been over 10ºC for the last 3 days so I would expect WTs to be around 50ºF.

I think ALL of the scenic ones are taken by you!

Does look cold don't it!! These pics courtesy of Paul!

And great fun on a float rod an 'pin!
-
Cheers - as ever a reliable 'fall back' when conditions are tough - fish appeared to be very localised though - not spread out throughout the stretch as I'd normally expect.....
-
Cheers Viney!

I saw a couple of very sizeable grayling - unfortunately motoring upstream through the shallows after I'd spooked them. What does appear to be completely absent are the pike - would usually expect to see/spook at least a couple on that stretch...

Both Paul and I did over 100 fish each - what was quite strange was I seemed to find the bigger dace and he found the bigger roach. Venue is home to my biggest ever chub (6-06) best ever brownie (8-12!!) and second biggest ever roach (2-01) and as with all the river between Hungerford and Newbury a lovely part of the world ..... and yes very !!!

Chris - Upstream is Rainsford!

Agreed, Rusty barbel on the pin are a whole lot of fun - though my biggest float caught is 'only' 8lb - a fish that caused me a very merry dance a few years back!!! Summer/autumn eveings by the river have there own attractions however - been privileged to see barn owls on 2 parts of the Kennet this summer. I usually stop after the clocks go back as it does mean arriving and setting up in the dark. If I do (as in this week) it will be to swims I know really well - not just the bank but somewhere I know I'll be able to cast to in the dark (so usually near bank swims)....
-
Right place - and probably more importantly - right time. Do tend to get most of my bigger barbel in the dark theses days. If you look back through my blog - its the only time I seriously fish for them on the lead....
-
Should have just taken the water temp and gone home - I knew it would be hopeless on the barbel front but then I have had a 6lb+ chub from this venue already this season......so whilst a spottie saved me blank I'd still rather have had a chub (even a 3½lb one!)

No better way than on the float - bit heart-stopping at times but thankfully its first charge was upstream so I had the current to help me... 3rd summer on the trot that I've had a 7lb+ barbel on float fished maggot from here.....
