  1. Common - similar in size to the ones I've rehomed from Willows recently. There's a LOT of mis-identification of crucians (usually mistaken for brown goldfish!) below is my rule of thumb - on the bank guide!

Lateral line count - 33 (32 or 34 MAY be OK if everything else is right!) Less than 32 - liklely to be Goldfish or goldfish cross, more than 34 common carp or cross

Dorsal - Convex (Goldfish are concaved)

Caudal - Paintbrush shaped (Goldfish are much more v shaped)

Mouth - absolutely NO barbules or even vestigial ones (carp or carp cross)

  2. On several occaisions I had over a dozen in my swim - most taking and unwarranted curiosity in my float! Surface fishing would have been completely out of the question!

BTW - did you get your key back? - might be worth asking on the NAA FB page if you haven't - gets more traffic than the forum!

  3. Yes the roach was a real surprise - and not repeated since! After the total fish kill on Alders which was around 2006 the lake bed profile was remodelled. Prior to that it was similar depth to Willows. Deeper channels were created and it was made much shallower in the middle - the original plan was to have this as an 'island' of common reed down the middle of the lake - and common reed was put in  - only to be completely eaten by geese during the first winter after planting!! So now we have the lillies instead! BTW - I quite like the platform swims - can get above the fish quicker and easier to bully them away from the lillies I find!

  4. Maybe I should have been a little clearer - 4 years ago (17/18 season) I had 4 evenings in P5 and ONLY caught bream from it - plus, on one occaision, a very big surprise in the shape of a 1lb 2oz roach! Never less than 3 Bream and never more than 5 - might not count as a lot but I was pretty satisfied with the return from just short evening sessions midweek, after work. My best from Alders that summer was 4-15 - so we probably ought to be seeing 6lbers by now.

P5 is on the railway bank - P1 is the corner peg nearest the car park at the western end of the lake - just count round from there anti-clockwise....

  5. These were all re-homed in Willows - maybe the club should have a carp catching day there in a similar vein to their roach relocation project from Warwicks to Alders.... I used to catch a lot of bream in open water from peg 5 casting about 2/3rds across to the lillies - but never many tench from there. Whereas just off the lillies (in any peg!) seems a much more reliable tinca spot with the odd bream putting in an appearance - which is fine by me!

  6. Diary entry for 18/09/04. Records:

    1) Gudgeon 13

    2) Dace 32

    3) Roach 15

    4) Chub 2 (biggest 3lb 6oz)

    5) Perch 7 (biggest 1lb 7oz)

    6) Bleak 2

    7) Pike 2 (biggest 8lb 6oz)

    8 ) Bream 1 (2lb 13oz)

    9) Barbel 1 (2lb 14oz)

    10) Brown Trout 4

    11) Grayling 2

    12) Minnows lots

The other 5 species i've caught there in the past - but not on this day!

    Bullheads

    Rainbow trout

    Salmon Parr

    Rudd

    Tench

These last 2 have only turned up once each in 40 years of fishing the venue (escapees from the canal after flooding perhaps?). The place was (and still is in many respects) a veritable aquarium!

And no - never caught an eel from NAA water - in fact only once caught an eel from the Kennet system a bootlace on 14/3/91 from Osier Bed Stream at Theale!

  7. Up until a couple of season ago around a couple of dozen of us did a species race each season - so I have a number of pics of mini-species in my archives. Hambridge is a great place for variety. I've had 17 different species from there over the years - once had 12 in a single day!

  8. I love chub - had over 100 'pounders' in 5 of the last 9 seasons - and one of my seasonal targets is to get a decent one (well a pounder at least!) in every month of the season (June-March). Not many years I don't achieve it. Fun fact anagram of Chris Plumb is Mr Chub Lips - which has been my nom de plume on other online forums in the past!

  9. I'm sure of it. The swim is a long glide on a wide bend - there's probably half a dozen spots you could fish from. I start at the very top and work my way down until I'm opposite the trees in the feature photo. This took all morning and after resting the swim I just fished the bottom of the glide. What was interesting is that the closer I got to the trees - the bigger the fish got!

  10. Certainly up there for average size - most of the 4s were over 4½ and it got to the point of only weighing those which looked over 4 so may have missed some 'scrapers'! ? In truth though I was hoping for something even bigger - had a 6-03 from this swim March last year and my PB of 6-07 was caught just upstream of here in 2012 - just couldn't get through the nuisance 5lbers!?
