  1. The weird crap you find when searching about fisheries "management" http://www.sustainabilityforum.com/forum/j...2%A340-50k.html **** em.
  2. Apparently 245 "Fisheries experts" are to contribute to this "event" (who pays btw?) First one I found with Google is Dr Alex Rodgers of the Institute of Zoology in London.; http://www.zsl.org/science/ioz-staff-stude...rs,1079,AR.html Clearly no vested interest there. Anyone have any way of finding out how many actual FISHERIES Scientists with a CV that includes papers on managing FISHERIES are going to be at this event?
  3. Very little information at all in the Beebs "report"; just the usual press release advert advert that the Beeb calls news these days. Anyone know if these "Fisheries experts" due to attend are actual fisheries scientists or scientists with a view on fisheries?
  4. Heres one story Fishing families in remote UK areas took enormous risks to make money. They were at home with boats and the sea and did well. Some made serious money. They still live where they were born and their risk taking means the development of skills and employment in jobs the London press has never heard of. Want to develop offshore windfarms? then thank the history of engineering that runs through herring and then oil at places like Aberdeen.
  5. No idea who is included in the current idea of an angling "community" but whats with giving people your "full support" when you think it won't work? Fisheries really would benefit from Not.
  6. You "suspect"? So how did it happen? I don't fancy going to the bank to borrow 10K let alone a million. Please do tell the story of these greedy git fishermen..
  7. Very worthy and all that stuff, but how much does it cost to enforce?, can it actually be enforced at all in any useful way? Should it be enforced in the first place?
  8. The well organised "Green Brigade" only come in at stage 3 then? . Sorry but that looks like an upside down list to me anyway. Try listing it the other way 1. the GREEN BRIGADE (conservationists and others) who are generally better organised will advise the government on some important and necessary restrictions. 2. The government will do whatever it likes and introduce sea fishing licenses as there is no unified opposition and people will accept it and get used to it although they will moan about it on internet forums and amongst their friends. 3. A few concerned and dedicated sea anglers might give forming a register a go, but they wont get the support from the average sea angler who being an average UK person will sit on their rears until its too late to do anything let alone resist such legislation although many will moan like crazy after such legislation is introduced. I believe stage one is true. Just remove stage one surely?
  9. "We're not saying the sea is empty of fish," says Simon Brockington, the head of conservation at the Marine Conservation Society and co-author of the University of York study. "But our paper shows there are nothing like as many as there should be." On which day of the week or holy festival is the "many as they should be" moment found?
  10. Celeb Callum Roberts stuff is just fluff and we are all getting used to fluff as a currency because we are told its worth day in day out. Its still fluff though. Hes the current celeb chef of the media marine world. Gawd help him if they do they do their usual goodguy/badguy run to sell their papers.
  11. Just forget John Buchan , "Trawlermen" , etc and have a think about just how laughable it is for anyone to try and mine UK landing statistics for conclusions given the period included two world wars, the fall of the British Empire and as a sideline the cod wars.. No idea what your family history looks like but I doubt I have the bottle/hardness/iron to do what my ancestors did on hill farms in north Wales. How come the fishers get all this examination when they have yet to wipe anything out? Please provide details of your great great Grandfather's occupation so we can all "judge" it?
  12. Believe it or not Deene "O", i doubt any poster on this forum believes there has been no decline in fish stocks, but that is a long way from assuming a tonne of legislation generated by interested parties shouting "DeanO" in sync will improve anything. I take it for granted that someone from the angling royalty that is the AT actually read the original paper? No doubt a stupid assumption..
  13. The article does not provide the poor reader with access to the actual "science", but if its really all just based on comparing current landings at ports with historical ones then it sounds very iffy; that could mean absolutely nothing but spin. Can us plebs get a link to the original paper? or is it there and im just blind? Regardless of the truth or otherwise of the science, it was this that should get our alarm bells ringing: Im still struggling to understand what "sustainable" means, but it seems the MCS now seem to want historical targets for that sustainability? Fantastic news for anyone that makes a living at sea today.. ? aye right. Wonder if they would support a campaign for the same sewer system we had in place in their perfect moment .
  14. No. Maggie **** off and angered the Scots to the extent that natural Conservative voters won't go near them. Not healthy at all.
  15. Would sea anglers benifit from a free licence? IMHO that would be no; the cost is not the issue and a bit like our olds trading mirrors and beads to shaft the peeps on the red bits on the map while they robbed them of the good stuff. Any licence will be like a rachet. and take on a step by expensive step of its own. More restriction and poverty poured on our kids by the golden generation. Just an opinion
  16. They may know how to "handle themselves" better that the AT but they are still a grain of sand in the cogs turning atm. Maybe thats all they will be. They are "real" though. AT seems to be an oil to lubricate those cogs. Don't know if that will win them the place in Utopia they seem to seek. Hic
  17. Listened to Radio Scotland this morning and they led with a"discussion" on the evils of zoo's and Public aquariums. Got to hear a lot from the "CAPS" hater of all things captive, but the quiet guy from the zoo's was just too quiet and decent to have a go. Is he in need of a "makeover" or about time so much money is no longer poured at lame "journalists" Im in favour of paint-stripper questioning of the CAPs guy.. Apparently thats no more allowed than saying **** atm.
  18. And what do the "conservation heroes" that arrange these kind of stories, think they will do politically in the many remote areas that are totally dependant on fishing? I suspect they don't give a damn because they know nothing much. They will reap what they sow though id guess.
  19. You could not make it up. Nobody knows what going on with the eels (fact), but we now have have bans, restrictions and a new industry of Eel regulation, enforcement and promotion consuming money to what end? Money is being pumped into the "problem" even though it might not be a problem at all; it could be due to anything from Harry potter to some minute change in ocean currents. Who knows but lets legislate anyway
  20. Pay your crew off, cash in your boat/quota, start getting confused about ordering a coffee, and buy a holiday home in Spain or Croatia. Simples.. Worlds gone fcuking mad but you are only allowed to say so if you use a brand name rather than a dirty un-boxed profanity **** em
  21. "Year Zero" as in Pol pot's year zero in Cambodia? Heard all the screeching before but this is taking it to a new level.. Not good stuff whatever your take on the issues imho. Have i missed the link to the report in the article or isn't there one? Chris
  22. End of me taking anything else said seriously.
  23. I wonder if anyone has done a study of the friday jobs papers in local papers? Obviously i have only seen a few, but they are all the same; Council, government, health service, & "voluntary sector" are big adds taking up most of the page. In the tiny print bit are the jobs that pay for the big adds. Whats that about?
