  5. They (Portabote) are exhibiting at the LAS conference this coming Saturday. Dave Pugh, the LAS magazine editor has a 10ft one which he's just been using in Ireland in some pretty tough conditions. He loves it. He'll be at the conference so you can probably quiz him there, there are one or two other people who have them who'll probably be there too.

  7. The LAS conference is next Saturday (1st June) at Derby University. Should be a great day out with four different speakers covering everything from Bass on the fly to Pirahna on a big S to twenty pound pike around the world. There are loads of trade stands with just about everything you could ever need, and plenty of things you never realised you needed for sale. There will be quite a few new lures and products getting their first public showing as well. There's also a "Bring and Buy" stand, student rate cafe and bar etc. For more details and directions have a look at the "events" page on http://www.lureanglers.co.uk

  9. The Lure Anglers Society conference is on the 1st June at Derby University, not quite Kent, but lots of people travel up from Kent to go to it, join the migration! For more details go to the events page on http://www.lureanglers.co.uk

  11. A flipping switch is fairly redundant for pike fishing. It's used in America for people Bass fishing. They have a close range technique called flipping where they pull enough line off the reel for the cast then re-engage the reel before they cast. As they've got a handfull of loose line they can't easily turn the handle to re-engage the reel, hence the flipping switch, the reel is only in freespool as long as the thumb bar is depressed. I doubt there should be a spring under the spool tension cap. You certainly shouldn't need to put any rubber discs in there to slow the reel down. If you've got the magnets set on full and the spool tension wound up enough to let the lure drop slowly and stop when the lure touches the floor you should be able to cast OK. If it doesn't work then there's either something wrong with the reel or you need to spend more time practising. When you start out it's better to use lures of about an ounce with that set-up. Much lighter and you need to have a more educated thumb. If you are coming along to the Lure Anglers Society conference on the 1st of June at Derby University and you still aren't sure of the reel bring it along and I will have a look at it to see if there's anything wrong with it. As a final thing, if you put Power Pro, or any other braid on the reel make sure you put a couple of yards of mono on the reel first or else the braid will slip on the spool.

  13. Don't think so Elton. It's the two man one www.badgerclassics.com/Merchant2/me...Category_Code=5 Here, hopefully which I was wondering about.

  15. Does anyone have any experience of the Badger 2 man dome. I never session fish but need to get a tent for occasional camping trips, are theses big enough for 2 people easily? Are they quick and easy to put up? Are they fit for the purpose they're sold? If not, what can you recommend for similar money, about £70?

  17. A two turn grinner (uni) knot round the spool would probably slip in such dire circumstances. Sounds like you'd be better off using a multiplier or perhaps one of those mega tough penn spinfishers if the fish are that big though....

  19. Proper trace wire is so cheap you can hardly save a fortune! Ring Rok-Max and get either 90lb sevenstrand wire and crimps or 130lb singlestrand wire. Shouldn't cost much more than a fiver and you'll have confindence that the stuff you're using should be OK.

  21. How about if you stop worrying about hunting and look at the CA as a resource. They are very media aware and seem able to produce people who can handle the media well and get the point across eloquently. If fishing uses them as a resource for the good of fishing and throw some enthusiasm into the promotion of fishing through them, how can it do any harm? Fishing, as a whole doesn't seem able to produce a united front about anything, maybe if it was all channeled through an organisation like the CA there would be a more cohesive message being put out to the general public. In an ideal world an organisation like the CA would be the first port of call for government, media etc then they would inform the relevent groups down the line who would be able to advise properly. At present there is no working structure, take the Lake district livebait fiasco as an example. The government put a quango together which seemed to consist of the EA and a few other, mainly game fishing representatives. They decided between themselves to ban the use of live, or dead freshwater fish in the nominated lakes. If there had been a good structure the governent might have asked for the EA and the CA (For example) to consult and the CA would have informed the PAC and other relevent bodies about what was going on and got them involved. As there is no structure, just a lot of disperate groups all trying to work independantly at the moment I'm sure a lot of things are allowed to slip through unchallenged. I couldn't give a monkeys if the top group is the CA or any other organisation, but it seems to me that they have a very good working infrastructure and it seems silly not to take advantage of it.
