  6. Top-Pond @ Merthyr Tydfil looking towards the Brecon Beacons in the distance... Autumn 2005 Camera: Pentax Optio S5i
  7. i configured it alright, just hated the damn thing (personal preference).. i put up with it for a month or so then uninstalled... taraa, good riddens
  8. well, must only feel even more privelliged to have seen (and caught) a swimming adder, an even rarer site then eh do a google search on dogs, may say something like "four legged kanine creature mostly found on land" seen them swimming too ya know
  9. hehe indeed indeed catching snakes was (i mean still is) fun hehehe i've emailed my mate, just waiting a reply, hope it's an address he still checks tho.. after all this talk about the adder i really wanna see the pic too. i'm gutted now should have hassled him for that photo as soon as we got home.. i am king procrastinator and let it slip
  10. hiya been thinking of getting a new fly rod, got my eyes on 1 in particular (or 1 brand at least) & just wondered if there's any out there u guys would swear on so i dont have to order it from america. I purchased a st.croix road from the states for spinning 5ft 6" (PS56ULF2) and because it was so life-changingly amazing i'm thinking of getting one of their fly rods too.. again small and light as poss for river fishing and not the mega pricey ones! (i think they're called 'legend elite' or summut - silly expensive.... $$$$$ nnnnope) anyhow which 1 would you choose tho?? hmmm... and if a not a st.croix then what others out there are upto the same high standards? here's the site (& rod specs) : St. Croix much apprieciation in advance..
  11. never leave home without it! i buy a big 5 ltr bottle of the stuff from a local farm shop for a few quid... perrrrrrfect oh and i also buy a sack of decent goat feed from the farm shop too. it's got all the ingredients u'd pay big bucks for in a tackle shop.. good for bulking out your mix.
  12. a friends uncle and his team of a dozen or so mates go to france 3 or 4 times a year and have been for years now, proper veterans and i'm always asking gav (my friend) to pick his uncles brains over such matters.. btw his uncle also held the welsh pike record for a number of years too, the man IS a fish.. he said although they often take numerous baits & boilies out there by day 2 or 3 they usually end up with bait either supplied by the lakes themselves (he phones first and pre-orders to get discount as they'll try sting u otherwise if it's on the spot) or they tap up nearby tackle/bait suppliers.. it makes sense really think about it the fish just home in on what they consider natural food and if the lakes are chucking this stuff in day after day then the carp are naturally drawn to it.. take your pro-activ pinnaple tho and give em a whirl, it's never stopped gav's uncle from trying everytime good luck, hope u catch ol hermy!
  13. hi tony, yep 1000% sure i'd know those V-shaped makings in an instant and i did, around 8 or 9 people about also confirmed this too (although i knew for sure anyhow). i've seen a few coiled up nr logs down the river too although they were pretty small ones, they're quite common here in wales yet quite illusive, it's a natural habitat for sure. plus, of all the grass snakes i caught as a kid (miwwions) i never saw one that long! use to go collecting grass snakes (scaring my dad to death with em - he hates em hehehe) any log or rock was a potential catch.. i haven't seen the friend i went with on that day for quite some time now as his business has taken him far and wide but will try and get hold of him so he can email me the photo, hopefully he still has it.. watch this space
  14. bit of an odd one but defo memorable. I was fishing hendre lake (cardiff) and spotted something swimming towards me and my mate and when it got closer realised it was an unusually large adder snake! when it got to bankside in front of us i felt brave enough to do a steve erwin and grab the critter by the tail.. i've seen 1 or 2 in the past but never a snake this big in the uk, it had to be at least 5ft long and nearly as thick as my wrist.. hence all the fuss it caused people both running away and running around the lake to see it.. my buddy has a photo of me holding it on his camera will try and post it.. also caught a 13lb common that day too.. ahh summer memories
  15. grrrrrr!! yes well done for collecting it.. i take a bin liner with me when i go spinning down the river and on my journey back pick up as much as i can see every time.. it really gets to me littering!!!! it's reassuring to see others (you guys) share the same 'pet hate' grrrrrr i'm with sharkbyte, name & shame em all... filthy swines!!!!
  16. very well said steve I'd just like to say i've not got a baitboat but would maybe consider it for choice situations.. I've read all the post in this thread and although kinda agree with nearly everyone on this subject i can't help feeling somewhat sypathetic or maybe even sad for all those fearing the (as u say) 'technical creep'.. the chances are they too will eventually come round to trying it out and if they're really stubborn or set in their ways then maybe it's their loss and they'll just have to just wait to hear the fishing stories of their grandchildren or the next generation saying: son : "hey pops caught loads of carp on our last session!!".. the response??? : "how so many? wasn't like that in our day u know, anyhow son it is not the quantity but quality of the catch that counts!" son : "yeh yeh whatever pops, can i borrow your vintage reel for a blast on my next session? hehe" each to their own but I love it all including using vintage tackle and the old tricks DO work and they DO bring their own satisfactions, and i still try whenever possible.. think of old Chris and Bob (passion for angling) when he sits that scarecrow in the lake for weeks then stalks from a tree before eventually replacing the scarecrow with himself to trick the carp!!! absolute magic!!! now thats technique! but i will never close my ears or eyes to new tricks and gadgets. some of us blokes are inherently gadget crazy, it's a fact and it's inevitable that new methods / techniques / systems will eventually prevail as have 99.9% of new innovations which have taken our sport to new levels and caught us MORE fish, like bite alarms etc. with any new innovations there's always that section of people who will either (as a lost cause, no point arguing) disagree till the bitter-end (for personal reasons) or slowly but surley accept the changes and embrace them. rules on certain waters is only fair and besides at a time of transition as in any sport it's usually the non believers stubborness which can be thanked in the end for addressing the key issue which here is of etiquette and an anglers right to a peace and tranquility... baitboats on a 1 acre lake whizzing back and forth or poaching other peoples swims?????.... capital N capital O, no! like with most things there's a time and a place. large lakes and gravel pits with large distances between anglers, urmm yes ok.
  17. kool kool never worry my friend ebay is almighty and great.. you can just work out the best time to list yours, then just wait till everyones in bed the following week, sneak up and purchase a new soul for half the price when nobody's looking, problem solved
  18. Hi Ian, Fishing on the Taff is amazing. well i love it anyhow.. I usually cover around 2 - 3 miles either up or down-stream and back each session.. spinning is about covering as much water as possible then moving on to the next bit.. it's like an adventure, huckleberry-fin style.. whats around the next corner? tactics, well think of nature and mimic it. trout eat anything even their own arrrrrrrr cannabals lol.. Best time to go spinning in general is at beginning of the season when there are lots of tasty snacks in the shape of small fish / minnows about and spinning a lure (small mepps type) kinda mimics nature at this time of year... later on when it warms up and fly's start hatching get the fly rod out, again mimicing nature, keeping it simple.. all types of juvenille and adult caddisfly, mayfly and stonefly work well on different months as the year progresses. as far as i know day tickets can be purchased from the tackle shop in Merthyr town (main drag) and also at the (only) corner / grocieries shop in Quakers Yard, prolly some other places too, wouldn't be hard to stalk them down once in the area, just ask. not sure how much day tickets are these days as i just pay the £45 every year to re-new my licence, a few quid, fiver at most??. i know there's a bag limit of 6 per person per day but personaly i return every fish and maybe get a photo of one if it's a biggy. they are mainly stocked brownies with the odd wildy now and then which is nice. the conditions of the waters here have really improved over the years and more and more salmon and greyling are being caught of recent too. if ya in the area drop us a line and i could show u some wkd spots, i'm usually down there every other day anyhow so no skin off my nose fella nice 1, tight lines!
  19. good job ol chap it's not easy putting a site together init... i had a wee shuffle around but ultimatly the first thing that stikes me (although cheesy) is the absence of an 'about' blurb first off.. short n sweet set as your index/homepage to give a brief overview to the site and what it's all about or vision statement hehe even if WE all know instinctivly. that way you wil natually get more neutrals (new to or just getting into fishing) to stop browse a little more than they would of.. impressions count and the first few seconds are vital to ppl staying on the site for long periods... i reckon it has potential and reckon it'll help by having that brief overview at the start.. only a suggestion, other than that great concept.. keep at it peave n all tha
  20. not sure if it's the same opening times for rivers over the uk but ever since close of season (end of september) i've been busting to get down my local the river taff and spin for some trout.. As well as being in heaven (down the river... every other day.... prolly why i'm still single lol), i did much carping and lakes in general last year but the river, oh how i've mised it. march so close yest so far... bring on the trout! anyone else out there itching for open season on their rivers or is it just me?..... guys?
  21. I'm Back! hey Vitae that dropper thing looks great.. Wish you all the best for the future for that one m8. I haven't been here for a while, had a good read and there's many interesting views on the subject of chumming. healthy discussions a'gwan! tight lines p.s. re: qustion bout method feeders, i've tried this sea fishing as well as carping and it works great!
  22. i'm no expert on sea, the rivers and lakes are my main domain but we did catch a doggy each, i caught 2 large ray and my mate caught 3 plus a flounder or summut.. not what u'd call a record breaking catch i know but considering we been the same place 3 times b4 and caught nowt so i puts it down to the chumming suppose.. & cheers 'newt' had a good read of those articles.. all good info
