  1. This is a diagram I think they have taken it a little further
  2. I have found a few refferences to this but no firm information on if it progressed. Does any one know if this invention has been seen to a working marine propulsion engine? "Steam fires underwater jet engine" 19:00 29 January 2003 Exclusive from New Scientist Print Edition. Pursuit Dynamics How steam engines work A revolutionary new steam engine, described by its inventors as "an underwater jet engine", may soon be powering dinghies and speedboats more efficiently, cleanly and safely than a conventional outboard motor. The Pursuit Marine Drive produces thrust by using the energy from high-pressure steam to draw in water through an intake at the front and expel it at high speed through the rear. The steam emerges at high speed from a rearward-facing ring-shaped nozzle into a cone-shaped chamber, where it mixes with the water (see graphic). Shock waves created as the steam condenses are focused by the chamber to blast water out of the back. The drive was invented by Australian engineer Alan Burns and developed in Britain by engineers at Pursuit Dynamics in Royston, Hertfordshire. Last week, New Scientist witnessed a version just 20 centimetres long develop around 30 horsepower (22 kilowatts) in a test tank, enough to power a speedboat. But the company says it can be scaled up to about 300 horsepower. A crucial element of the design is that water flowing into the engine draws in air through a vent ahead of the steam jet. The air bubbles change the way the steam mixes with the water, and this significantly increases the engine's efficiency. Heat scavenger Computer simulations have shown how this works, but Pursuit Dynamics is keeping the details secret. "We know the answer," says Mike Todman, the company's chief technical officer, who was previously chief engineer with the marine engine division of Rolls-Royce. But he says it will not be revealed until patents are granted. Steam for the drive is generated in a small boiler burning diesel or petrol. If the drive is being used to assist propulsion in a ship, the boiler can scavenge waste heat from conventional engines. It can be fed by seawater if necessary. The boiler may be built from corrosion-proof materials, and if the steam flows fast enough it will blast out any other deposits. With no moving internal parts, and no propeller, the engine should be cheap to manufacture. It is also robust, and can easily cope if seaweed or rope are drawn into the inlet. Water emerging from the engine is no more than 3 or 4 °C warmer than the water it draws in, so there is no danger of scalding. And as it does not leak oil like conventional outboards, and has no propeller that could injure large sea creatures, it should be less damaging to the environment. The steam drive can also function as an extremely robust pump. It can shift water, sewage or oil, and in a demonstration for New Scientist, Todman shoved large quantities of lard and cardboard into the inlet without the pump suffering any ill effects. It could even mix materials used by the food industry. "It doesn't simply mix -- it macerates," says Todman. Pursuit Dynamics itself does not plan to manufacture the engine. Instead, the company hopes by the end of the year to have licensed other manufacturers to make it.
  3. Count me and the misses in as well! Ive got this species thing off know, weavers & Gurnards at one location, makies 5 mins paddle, pollack every where, flatties no worries, Thats five I know are easily possible, still trying for an elusive bass but should be fun oh yes and of course a doggie thats 6. Do seals count?
  4. Yes you will, but we returned to bad news regarding my mother inlaw and have been too and from Hospital in the evenings so I have not had a chance to put our pictures up yet but I will do shortly.
  5. Been away for two weeks using my new C Tug over soft sand and had a similar problem with the strap for two days until I actually worked out how you are supposed to use the strap. You feed it up from underneath the buckle and send it back throught the buckle. You can then pull it as tight as you like!!! We pull a malibu II XL Thriple seater throught soft sand pebbles grass on our trips out and it works well. The malibu II XL is pretty flat and not tappered on the section of the Yak where we strap it to though so I have no experience on a tappered Yak. I am still well pleased with my C TUG
  6. Fully Booked till September but weather can be nice then take a look!!! A few members of Anglers net have had good Holidays in our Bungalow and have left us thank you notes after there holidays. Cant get better than an independant review!!
  7. No sorry bought a Diesel 406 estate, Wasn't even going to sell the Mondeo this year was going to wait till next summer but the 406 was good deal so bought it. Thats why it has just had a full service with brakes and timing belt done. Its in good nick for the milage and I recon will give trouble free motering for next 30,000 miles at least. Off on Holidays for two weeks now, will put it in the free adds when I return with 12 months mot it will be gone straight away then.

  11. Camera is a Pentax Optio Waterproof WP one its about a year old its a 5 million pixcel one, Had some good advice from the Kayak web page where they said to make sure its in sports mode, 1/2 press the shutter to make sure the camera has focused and calculated exposure already and set the ISO rating of of auto to 400, it does seem to reduce the lag substacially so I will be off on saterday to try again. Hopefully to catch themin mid flight this time not re-entry http://www.aberporthholidays.co.uk/Dolphin...eal%20watch.htm
  12. Thats some good advice there thanks I will try that with the Optio wp (PRESSING HALF WAY TO MAKE IF FOCUS before taking pic in sports mode) before I go taking my SLR out. I have a minolta with 600 mm lense but did not really want to take that on a kayak.
  13. Thats the camera I have the Optio WP, guess I'll just have to press before they jump then.
  14. There are Makies about in this part of the woods now we got some last weekend.
  15. Whilst taking pictures of Dolphins Jumping I was wondering why I was missing them all the time until I realised there is a delay between pressing the shutter and the camera taking the picture. Bummer!!! is there any way around this, its going to be difficult to catch a Dolphin jumping if I press shutter as soon as Dolphin immerges but camera does not take picture until the Dolphin has long gone!! Below is the best I got

  20. Cool Welcome to the Yak Pack!
  21. They are long but not shore they are long nough to go arounhd two yaks stakked on top of each other, but you can easily add your own straps (roof bar staps would be perfect.
  22. If it gets too ruff I would prefer to be sat in a sit in with a nice spray deck, knowing you can role it with out a paddle if need be.
  23. Your absolutley right we should where PFD's, We are both good swimmers and were whereing wetsuits, and we did not go more than twenty yards from the coast. If we intend going further out we get them out of the hatch and put them on. but your right no excuse really. I'll have a look at my wheel barrow wheel and see if its bigger and will fit.
